Could be a few things, I assume you've checked the oil level. You could have a worn engine and therefore low oil pressure, could need a new oil pump. you can connect a mechanical oil guage to check whether it is a problem with your guage

How do i add transmission fluid to a 1994

the reason only main dealers should perform this operation is that the atf has to be over 80 degrees celcius to obtain a true level reading. you should be able to check it yourself, you will need to give the car a good run, putting plenty of load on the gearbox. (ie. rapid accelerations, uphill etc) as this will heat the fluid to the desired temperature range. then get under the gearbox, and there should be a 5mm hex key bolt in the gearbox sump. remove the plug, if oil comes out then the transmission is over full. if no fluid comes out then you will need to top it up. this is accomplished by removing a black and red blanking plug where the dipstick should be. just top up the fluid till it drips out of the level hole. ( PLEASE NOTE, THE VEHICLE MUST BE LEVEL TO OBTAIN CORRECT LEVEL, ALSO VEHICLE MUST BE IDLING IN EITHER PARK OR NEUTRAL AS THIS ALLOWS THE FLUID FLYWHEEL TO BE FULL ASWELL )

If it's not showing any problem during normal driving eg rough idle, power loss, etc. most likely it will be a short circuit, but it will be a good idea to have it scanned during driving to check for an error code.

I have a 1994 vw golf engine light comes on

I would call first, but most of the chain auto parts stores will do a scan on your computer and that will tell you what problems have been stored over time. This is a free service since they would like to sell you some parts if they can steer you toward them.
The memory in in your ECU will keep track of errors that occur even after the check engine light is happy.

Where is the dipstick on a VW golf?

If you are talking about the oil dipstick, it should be located in the froint of the engine, if not there, check on the drivers side of the engine (should have an orange colored handle). If you still can't find it in either of those places i would start looking for the tube... the dipstick may just be missing and may be why you cant find it. Hope this helps.
