First, is your engine light on? If it is find out what the trouble code is. You can get this checked at most auto part stores Autozone/Checkers. If you have no engine light on, the possibility of other problems exist. If you have a lot of miles on it, try cleaning the nozzles. You can do this by putting a gallon of kerosene and about 6 oz of Lucas fuel conditioner then top off with diesel. I have a Jetta TDI and this has worked really good at cleaning them up. Also, make sure you don't go over on the service recommendations on the timing belt. Some call this a shuttering problem. My 2001 would do this and through this process of cleaning them it has stopped. My 2001 TDI would accelerate with flat spot around 2000 to 2300 RPM. This has gone away as well. Check and make sure the fuel filter has been replaced.
My 1994 volkswagen golf has a problem with the
It may be running because the engine hasn't cooled down. These fans will run until the engine reaches a specific cool temp. But if it's not running hotter than normal temp, it's within the temp switch, which reads the temp of the engine, or the relay could be bad and not know when to shut down. While you're driving look to see what the temp gauge is reading. This will lead you in different direction for the temp. switch.
I need to change my distributor on my 1994 golf.
Pull the distributor and look for the series number, or take it down to the parts house and have them match the distributor to a new oem replacement. Takes the guess work out of the engine build code.
1994 vw gulf has air in the fuel line, how to get
Loosen the fuel line at the injector pump and crank the engine to push them out. You may need to loosen the lines at the injectors as well to push it all out. (I've had to bleed a number of diesels of all sizes) However, the other question is how did it get in there? If you ran out of fuel and need to bleed it out, fine. If not, an air bubbles are continuously showing up in the fuel line, you may have a suction side leak (a leak before the primary fuel pump that is sucking air in)

more than likely the fuel filter, where the pipes connect to the filter there is rubber rings ,check these 1st as they give alot of bother..they tend to draw air in if they are leaking.

If the shifte indicator is showing the transmission in 2nd gear vs. park or neutral then yes it is very probable that it may start in a gear (closing the neutral safety switch) keep in mind the car will of course "take off" on you once started. I would highly recommend repairing this prior to use; it is only a matter of time until old habits emerge and you start the car with out be prepared for it to move on you. If you must use it please be certain to have your foot firmly on the brake when starting; I'd throw on the emergency brake for good measure too.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Hi, if your car is a diesel then the chances are that the glow plugs need replacing as this is the most likely cause.
If the car is petrol then i would get the plugs and leads looked at make sure they are clean and not damaged.
Its worth getting the fuel line checked in case the fuel is draining back into the tank this would happen if the fuel pump is on its way out.
Let me know if its petrol or diesel then i can assist you further ok
