doubt that car has any fusible links, I would look for a large fuse on the battery cable end or in the fuse panel.

Check fluid level, check vacume line to shift modulater on trans if there is an air leak it wont shift right if theres fluid in the line the modualator is bad .Change fluid and filter ad lucus trans treatment.

engine runs smooth if giving more than idle pressure. It is when the motor is engaged with transmission at start the engine lopes and wants to cut off. If I press the throttle hard it takes right off. If I come to a stop I can put transmission in neutral to keep it from cutting off. This creates a shifting that is not normal and I'm afraid it is a sign of failure coming.

what gasket are you talking about the head gasket? if so its about a week to do the job typically cause have to take heads off and can figure run into multiple problems along the way and need a new valve cover gasket cause it will fall apart and a new water pump and new water pump gasket

starter is under car next to rear of engine. starter shoots an "arm" forward round with teeth on it to turn flywheel. you can try wd40 on this "arm" maybe there's dirt/etc preventing the arm from moving. if you need to replace, should be one wire harness connections and 3 or more bolts. disconnect battery before removing starter if you need to replace.
