i have 2005 phaeton that is doing the same thing . i am going to change the temp sending unit and the coolant cap. hopefully that will fix it if not then i really don't know i am puzzled like you. i will post later if this fix mine or not.my car only act like it will over heat once you start it from cold in about 20 mints after that it runs fine for the rest of the day with no problems temp steady at 200 oil temp goes up and down but never past 220.so i think the engine is ok but still cant take a chance.

You might need to replace your heater core. You can buy a used one online for a pretty good price.

When you turn them on, you should hear your motor kick on. If it does, it could be the actual switch, but I would check the fuse first.

Be careful with what you use to clean this part. Only electrical cleaner or a VW approved spray is to be used. Check your air filter for clogging or a misfit in the intake ductwork.
