My vw beetle 2000 gear selection has issues, it shows neutral on dash board but D on gear lever shifter,D on dash board while shifter is on 3. What could be the problem? Thanks Chris.

Could be a mechanical issue if cable to transmission is loose. Has anyone worked on the transmission ? If so, cable might not of been properly aligned to actual transmission lever.

1963 vw newly rebuilt engine,

Could be one or both of two things. 1. The accelerator pump in the carb is clogged, the linkage is unhooked, or the diaphram in the pump is bad. It's cheap to replace and comes in the carb rebuild kit. This usually just causes hesitation when you step on the gas pedal. It doesn't usually cause the engine to stop running. 2. More likely is that the main jet in the carb is clogged. At idle, high vacuum under the closed throttle plate in the carb causes fuel to flow thru the idle jet. As the throttle plate opens (as you step on the pedal), the vacuum under the plate dissipates, stopping the flow of fuel thru the idle jet, and the vacuum ABOVE the throttle plate increases, which is supposed to then draw fuel from the carb bowl thru the main jet in the carb. If the main jet is clogged with dirt, then it can idle just fine and die as soon as you step on the pedal.

Transmission has to be replaced. The current one has an ELY code. Does the replacement have to have the same code?

Rpo codes have to match. They do use Rpo codes in different years mostly. Some are year specific.

VW COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

while looking at the engine from the front, locate the transmission, come up the side of the engine and you will see a plug that is connected to a hose. that is were the temp sensor is located. remove connector and take a flat head screw driver and a pair of pliers and back out the c clip. pull the senor out and make sure you reach down in side and removed the old o ring. toss them to the side. the top of the sensor is either black or if it has been replaced before it will be green. take some of the coolant and rub it on the new o ring before installing the new one. install the new sensor, while pushing down on the sensor reinstall the c clip start the car and let it get to operating temp. shut the car down, reopen the hood and SLOWLY release the pressure in the coolant system to bleed any air in the system. and POW your done. total time of repair..about 15 minutes at the most.

First of all you need to access the Engine Control Module (ECM) using suitable diagnostic equipment (VAS, VAG-Com, or similar) connected to the data link connector of the car, in order to pull out all DTC's memored. DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Code. Then you will bu full informed about the root cause of the problem, and you will be able to repair & replace bad pieces and reset the ECM. Then the EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) yellow light will turn OFF.

2000 new beetle 1.8Ltr Shuts off

The EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) is the "fly by wire" system that controls the throttle, it took the place of the cable that went from the gas pedal to the throttle body on VW. If this light is on and there is also a P0102, MAF (Mass Air Flow) related code stored in the vehicle's computer, the EPC may be caused indirectly from a faulty MAF. If the EPC is on and there is no other codes stored, it could be a faulty electronic throttle body or need to be re-programmed. The vehicle's computer must recognoze the throttle body so when replacing it with new or used it will need to be programmed at the dealer. Recently I replaced a MAF (a common problem on VW's) on a VW Golf and when I cleared the code the EPC went off as well.

Check the engine codes, and replace or repair the faulty sensor (most likely the MAF sensor).

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

My epc light came on and i lost power

I am having the same problem with my beetle, does another triangular light come on at the same time?

I'll be watching to see how this gets answered. My car is in the shop now and other than EPC meaning the Electronic Powertrain Control, the mechs can't help me because they can't catch it with the light on to get the codes.

Today the check engine came on along with the EPC, so tomorrow I hope to have an answer. I'll be sure to let you know.

Epc light came on and now car wont start, what do I do?

I had this same problem on my 2001 Beetle. The EPC light refers to the Electronic Pedal Control that disengages the shift lock when you depress the brake. On the beetle there was a recall on this part for replacement and it is recommended that you take it to a dealer for free replacement. If you cannot get to a dealer, the part is about $10 - $20 at pep boys (or any other parts store).

The trick to getting the EPC to engage correctly if you cannot get the car going is to go under the drivers side in front the brake pedal arm where the sensor is located (this is a plastic or metal plunger that the pedal rests against and is easy to spot) and depress the brake with one hand and the sensor with the other and release quickly. It may take a few times, but this should disengage the EPC lock. You should hear an audible "thunk" which will indicate that it worked.

Where is the the thermostat on a 2.0 , 2000 vw

First time you might check the thermostat operating.

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!

The thermostat location for 2000 VW Beetle 2.0L is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!!

Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 050 121 113 C, in german - "Kuehlregle".

Remark: 87 ... 102 Celsius deg.
Price around $35:
