Died while driving and wont start

CK your distributor rotor ....pull it off and look in side the hole where it fit on the distributor shaft if it really black in side replace it . If OK then either your ignition module ( inside the distributor a little black block with wires going to both end of it ) or the Stator inside the distributor has shorted out . The stator is kinda hard to change if you don't have the right tools . i think rebuilt distributors from the parts store have gotten a lot cheaper then they use to be ; you may want to change the whole thing a new one will come with a new module and stator

What causes chugging?

Sounds like bad fuel, clogged/blocked fuel filter, air filter maint. of the vehicle needed (may need tune up) or internal engine problems. You have to start with the basics. How many miles, how well was the vehicle maintained etc. Cars usually don't just break with no notice.

You need to check to make sure it has spark. If not it may have a bad ignition module or coil, or problems inside the distrubutor. It may have a faulty temperature sensor for the ecm which can overfuel or underfuel it. You need a scanner to check that. You need to check fuel pressure. Just because you smell gas doesn't mean that the pump is woking correctly.

I think my speedometer cable is disconnected

If your's has one it hooks in the side of the transmission. Most newer cars are electronic. There is a small motor that drives the speedo. After you get the instrument cluster out it is easy to change. Make sure you can buy the motor before you take the cluster out.
