The car runs great but often stops while slowing down or stopped in idle. Replaced the fuel filter but it almost seems worse. What could this be and how do I do a computer scan for a code? Thank you.
Most likely solution is probably idle sensor.

Service engine soon light stays on
Nissan code:
P1444 Canister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve
Generic OBD II code:
DTC Codes - P0300-P0399 – Ignition System or Misfire
P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
I hopes this helps you.
Replace or fix these two items should do the trick.
It's hard to diagnose a car over a computer.

1998 nissan Altima blown head gasket repair price
It's really hard to tell how much it will cost to fix this because you don't know how much damage has been done to the engine itself because of the blown head gasket. Assuming you caught it early and there is no damage to the engine, you are looking somewhere between $1100 - $1400. A website you can look at that gives you prices for repair estimates is http://www.repairpal.com. Thanks for rating my response but please let me know if you have any more questions before deciding you give a poor rating. Thanks for using FixYa!

1998 Altima GXE has a code of P1491. It was suggested that this is a vacuum valve or PVC valve. How do I change the PVC Valve?
Code P1491 is not the PVC Valve. It is the Vacuum Cut Valve Bypass Valve.
Which is located above and away from the egr canister under the driver side
rear bumper it is round and have about 3 hoses connected to it. if it is
from a check engine light that says look at vacume cut valve check the
egr canisters purge valve some times they stick and throw the wrong
code

Nissan primera, engine management light permanently on. When car is first started gearbox changes without a problem. when the engine gets warm it sticks in 1st or sticks in 3rd and 4th and won't change down to 1st. But when the battery is disconnected the gearbox selects properly again.
Hi Kev,
Your Nissan Primera has an on-board diagnostic computer which can detect malfunctions in either engine or transmission.
When the Engine Management light remains lit, this means some faults are present and need investigating.
From what you've described, one of the issues is indeed related to the transmission, but you will need to have the trouble codes (DTC's) extracted from your vehicle's computer, in order to determine what requires repair.
Whenever power is disconnected (i.e. the battery) and re-connected, this resets your vehicle's computer momentarily, until such time as it detects the fault again.
Recommend you either have your local dealer extract the codes (for a small 15min labor fee), or learn to extract the codes yourself, using a suitable jumper wire.
"If this has helped you in any way, please rate this solution"

My. Nissan. Altima. 1998. Factory. Alarm. Is. Stop. The. Car. From. Start. How. Can. I. Get. My. Car. To. Work.
The factory immobilizers cannot be bypassed, you will need to take it to a Nissan dealer to get it fixed.

I can't find the valet switch for the alarm. At times the alarm randomly turns on and doesn't turn off after a few minutes (the longest the alarm was on was for 12 hours over night and was towed. When I reclaimed the car 12 hours later, the alarm was still on). The door locks automatically at times too. When I unlock my car door manually to get out of my car after parking and shutting it off, the locks automatically and immediately lock right after I unlock it and I would have to frequently try to unlock it to get out of the car before it locks again. I can disable the alarm with my key (I do not have a keyless entry or remote), but it is a hassle if my car alarm goes off in the middle of the night and gets towed again. I would like to remove the alarm or if I could remove a fuse of toggle a valet switch (which I can't find) to disarm the alarm. Any ideas?
You can't, it is an integral part of the electronic engine control system
