My '96 Chevy Silverado's hood

I have asked my mechanic about this issue before and it isn't easy.(1)If you can take off the grille to get at it and pull it in the open direction with pliers to replace.(2)You have to go at it from underneath and reach as high up as you can if it is even reachable to pull the cord also.Call around to make sure someone has one first then I would try it,if you can get it to pop, take another car and go pick up the new one.Or if it isn't broken, just re-attach.Good luck! Grind when putting into reverse,

When it is hard to go into gear or grinding when going into gear is an indication of worn synchronizers. The only solution is to take it to a mechanic that specializes in transmissions and having the synchronizers replaced. Sometimes a weak clutch and clutch plate can make it hard to go into the lower gears, you may want to examine these first.

Which gear is used when towing

Neutral. But I wouldn't tow it far if you are towing it with the rear wheels on the ground. How far are you going? If you are going to tow it a long distance with the rear wheels on the ground, you need to remove the rear driveshaft.

I have a 1995 chevy 2wd ex cab and my reverse wont work

If you have lost reverse then I would say you could have either bad clutch plates or a broken drive drum. The transmission will most likely have to come out and be repaired to fix the problem. There may be a transmission related service code stored in the computer so it wouldn't hurt to have it checked for service codes first but I think the problem is most likely internal and mechanical in nature.
