My key has always turned the ignition. However, the other day I put the key in the ignition and the actual ignition is locked in place and will not turn at all. Yes, I've tried wiggling the steering wheel. I've tried various things in vain and the ignition is still locked in place. Please help!
You will have to have the ignition cylinder replaced in the car. The only thing that keeps that ignition from turning is a little tang on the sdie of it. The only way that tang moves is by the tumblers inside the cylinder moving it. They will have a hard time replacing it too as they can't remove the cylinder from the bore until it is in the "run" position. Obviously there are ways to get them out but it usually involves using half the tools of a good tech's toolbox. if it is towed the towtruck driver will have to use dolly wheels or remove the shifter cable at the transmission to get it to move as it will be stuck in park- unless is a standard shift.
I am sorry for the bad news. Get a second opinion from somebody that can put their hands on it , but it sounds like you have a tried all or most of the tricks.
Good luck...........Scott

i need to know how to change the shifter cable on a 97 sunfire from point a to b we are already somewhere in the middle but i might have missed something also an assembly diagram would be nice
okay so i fixed the problem myself, this is how to do it. take out the consol shifter bot shift knob. take off the connecting sockets to the shifter. pull up the carpet and follow the cable it goes through the fire wall on the passenger side both cables go through another boot there. take a flat screw driver and pry off the boot. feed the cables underneithe the plastic peice that go through under the dash. open the hood and take off the sockets connecting the cables to the transmission. they are in a bracket a little further down the line pull them out of that then you should be able to take the cable right out. assemble in reverse order

1997 Pontiac Sunfire is missing badly. Stalls and has no power. Also has gas smell. The OBDII codes are Throttle Position Sensor (P0121), Engine Misfire (P0141) and O2 Sensor (P0400).
I have replaced the Throttle position sensor and confirmed the voltages to the sensor; both are good, but this didn't fix the problem.
What else could cause this problem and these codes? Any help is appreciated.
The OBD II code for P0400 is Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction.
I'm sure the only thing you have left is you may have to replace the EGR valve or check for any leak from the vaccum lines going to to EGR valve.

We tried turning the key to the on position and see if it would reset in 10 -15 minutes didn't work. Brought car to dealer, paid $150 I believe to reset the brain. Is this the same thing as replacing the module that you talked about? Or do I now need to go have this done??
Do you think that I need to replace ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:ANTI-THEFT CONTROLLER?? I read something about this too.
Please help.
Thanks,
Janine

usually attached to the passenger side strut tower in the engine

If you wish to obtain a replacement emissions label, most manufacturers
make the labels available for purchase. The labels can usually be
ordered from a local dealer.
