1997 Pontiac Grand Prix - Page 6 Questions & Answers
Wont start
If all you get is a brief turn of the engine, chances are it will start if you jump start the battery. Once running, take it to a parts store and ask them to test the charging system. If the battery is much over 4 years old, you have to question it's veracity.
Overheated 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix
You have probably solved the problem by now, but the first thing to do is re-check the coolant level once the engine cooled off. You may have cracked the radiator or the hose. Then the question becomes "what caused it to run hot".
My car keeps over heating engine oil milky and i have a leak
Oh no... I have bad news... you have coolant leaking into your engine oil. STOP DRIVING!!! You WILL seize up your motor. Depending on how badly you have over heated the engine will depend on how damaged your motor is. Could be just a seal like your head gasket (most likely), or you could have a cracked block. Let your vehicle sit and cool down, drain your oil taking a very close look at the first fluid to exit the drain plug. Water is heavier than oil. What I like to do is run it over a piece of cardboard, metal flakes will settle on the cardboard, any big chunks and you have an issue.
How can I tell if I have a blown head gasket and
Depends on how it blows. Can cause oil to mix in coolant or coolant in oil. Can also let coolant into cylinders to cause steam in exhaust. Or, combustion gas into coolant--this will cause overheating. You can tell this one from other types of overheating by noticing bubbles coiming into the coolant reservoir or up the radiator with the cap off. Let us know if you have more questions.
