4 cyl DIS ignition timing?
Unplug the EST wire which is brown with black tracer.
Set the timing to 6 degrees advance and the re-plug the EST wire.
I have a 87 fiero
For what I can see you need a tune-up
- spray fuel cleaner into the throttle body directly don't let the rpm drop too much but very close to stall. The engine must be normal temp around thermostat opening.
This part of the job needs to be done with the old spark plugs.
- spark plugs + adjusting gap of the new ones
- compression test.(no more differences between each cylinder +- 25 psi)
- clean throttle body and IAC valve.
Don't forget to change the fuel filter. That should solve your problems.
hope it helps
87 pontiac fiero ignition will not start when turning key into start position how ever will start when i push it down hill
Neutral start safety switch. It's a Rube Goldberg white plastic contraption above the clutch pedal. It can be replaced, but many people bypass it by connecting the wires. Of course if you do that it (the car) will jump if you (or your child, friend, valet, etc.) forget to put the clutch in before starting.
It may also be that your ignition switch is out of adjustment. This can happen when the car is unusually hot or cold because there is a long metal rod that connects the key to the actual switch. Temperature changes cause the metal to shrink or expand, maybe just enough so the contacts don't line up as they should. Adjusting the switch is just a matter of loosening and moving ever so slightly, but getting to it involves removing much of the dash.
The ignition pushrod, as it's called, may be binding. You may be able to free it up by spraying some WD-40 or similar lubricant between the dash and the top of the steering column using that long plastic tube that comes with the WD-40.
Getting a jump or using a jumper battery might work because the contacts are probably very close, so a little extra voltage might be enough to make things work normally.
Whatever you do, don't go wailing on the key because it can break. Parts inside the steering column can also break. You don't need that drama.
How do i check the power steering pump in a 1987 fiero
If you actually have power steering on a Fiero someone must have installed it because as far as I know GM never sold any Fiero's with power steering. They were planning on it, but if they had it would have been an electrical system like the ones common on new cars today, but in 1988 it would have been unique. You may have to contact the person who had it installed or otherwise determine what unit you have. If you search online you will find people who have installed power steering on Fiero's. You may find your car described, but at least you may get a good idea what you have.
What are the oil pan torque specs on a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT
To install:
Place a 3mm bead of RTV sealant on the oil pan sealing flange.
Install the oil pan and torque the 1 inch bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm) and the 1.5 inch bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. (19-29 Nm).
Install the starter assembly.
Install the flywheel and clutch housing cover.
Lower the vehicle and refill the crankcase with the specified engine oil.
Start the engine and check for oil leaks.
What cause a sluggish acceleration on the 87 fiero
poor fuel pressure and or volume, poor fuel quality, ignition timing is off, bad throttle position sensor(TPS), dirty air filter, fuel injector/s dirty or plugged or not functioning properly, bad manifold air pressure sensor(MAP). just some things that can cause your problem. I would suggest taking your car to a shop to have it diagnosed unless you have the testing equipment and specs to know what is within specs.
