Replacing the rear rotors on a 2003 E320

TO replace the rear rotors on a 2003 E320, do I:
1) need to remove the hub assembly on the rotor?
2) what size socket is required to remove the hub assemble?
and 3) what size allen wrench is required to remove the bolt of the brake assembly so I can rotate the brake assemble out of the way to remove the rotor?

Thanks in advance for any response you might be able to provide.

Comment by burtech, posted on Jul 09, 2008 TO be more specific, on #2 I need the scoket size for the locknut that is on the hub of the rear wheel assembly the retains the brake rotor to the assembly. Comment by burtech, posted on Jul 09, 2008 Also would I need to replace the removed locknut with a set of new ones.

So this is what it takes to replace rear brake rotors on a 2003 Mercedes E320;
1) open the bonnet (hood) of the car and loosen/remove the cap off of the brake fluid resevior.
2) remove outer spring clamp from brake assembly (it clips in to the iner edge of the holes of the caliper).
3)using a 7 MM allen wrench, remove the brake caliper.
4) using 18 MM box wrench, remove the caliper housing assembly off of the wheel hub.
5) using a star wrench, unscrew the rotor locking screw from the rotor
6) squirt some liquid wrench on the rotor hub and knock the rotor with a hammer to work the liquid wrench in.
7) using the same hammer, knock the rotor off the hub.
8) using a metal file, lightly file old residue off of the hub and place the new rotor on the hub.
9) set the hub by screwing in the lug nuts and then screw in the hub locking screw using the star wrench, then remove the lug nuts.
10) reinstall the caliper housing assembly onto the wheel hub using the 18 MM box wrench.
11) push back the brake claiper piston to its home position and install the inner brake pad (the one with the snap clips)
12) insert the outer brake pad in the claper housing assembly.
13) slide on the caliper housing with the inner brake pad in place (over the outer brake pad) and screw in the caliper screw rods using the 7 MM allen wrench
14) on the right wheel brakes, DO NOT FORGET to slide in the brake sensor (the one with the black connector) and connect it to the connector on the caliper housing.
15) be sure to reinsert the spring clamp onto the outer brake assembly to set the assembly squarely onto the wheel (there should be no wiggle in the brake assembly after the spring clamps are installed).
16) finally mount the wheels.
17) you can bleed the brakes at this point to release any trapped air (which is unlikely) but be sure to pump the brakes after starting the car BUT BEFORE MOVING IT to re-preassurize the brake system before driving the car.
17) ONE WEEK LATER - recheck brake assembly to ensure all is okay and brake fluid.

This proposed solution is for a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320 and NOT a 2005 model as stated by the limited option selection provided by FIXYA.com when initially describing the problem.

e320 car key doesn't work

Hi, my car key for my mercedes e320 could only opens & closes the door but cannot start the engine. please advise. I have a 2004 Mercedes E320. Recently, I started having trouble starting it. I put in the key or fob (whatever it's called) sometimes it won't release the steering wheel. If I mess with it (push in on it) it usually will end up turning, but sometimes it takes a while. I am not sure if it is the Key/Fob or something else. I am woried that one of tese days it won't work at all.

I appreciate any advise. Thank you!

I had the same problem with my 2001 E320. Roadside assistance came to my house and said it was a problem with the key. Ordered a new key (cost about $220 from Keys European in Van Nuys, CA) and the key worked. When I went to dealer to pick up the key, I spoke to a service consultant and he said that hes seen that problem before and replacing the key wont do anything (even though it did work). He said something about a ESI (something like that) and said that parts only on that cost about $600. So first thing you should try is replacing your key. Hope I helped.

With the key in position 1, hit the odometer reset button on the left on the cluster 3 times in a row. The cluster should beep once. scroll through the multifunction display with the page buttons until the display shows the onboard voltage screen. It will say something like "UB: 12.2 V" scroll threw this menu with with the up/down until you reach the "service menu" page. scroll down to "confirmation" press +, confirm full service with +. Wait till it says service confirmed. cycle the key off and then back on to position 2. Scroll to the normal service menu where it normally says how many days or miles till next service. If the service was reset correctly, it will say "service display not possible" for a few minutes while it recalculates. You must cycle the key off and back on before it will back out of the onboard diagnostic mode. If you dont back out, the esp/abs/bas lights will illuminate when the car is started

Your Climate control unit may have to be reset. The reset works as follows: With the key in the ignition and in posistion 2 push both the defrost button and the recirc button (at the same time) for five seconds or untill the led lights in those buttons begin to flash. Wait for 30 seconds or untill the led's stop flashing. Switch off the ignition. Check the evaporator temp sensor and pressure sensor for correct functionality.

You could need a recharge of freon or your A/C pump is bad. You can go to your local garage and have them recharge with an aftermaket freon kit or the dealer and have them put it on an a/c machine and really diagnose the problem

What is the F maintenance

What is the F maintenance for 2005 E 320 Mercedes. Is there a way around it? Can I reset the reminder myself? It was D then jumped to F Thanks

Answer

The F actually signals the importance of the maintenance required and it's a critical one: change all filters and fluids (engine, brake, steering, transmission) , even the rear axle and especially the automatic transmission filter and fluid (don't believe the 100,000 mile service) or you better start saving $5,000 for a rebuilt tranny. Change all belts and save the old belts as a backup. Be sure to change the Cabin Charcoal (Carbon) air filter and the spark plugs too. Also all the suspension parts will be inspected thoroughly. Service F is a 6 hour service
To reset it turn on the ignition and get to the service warning. Hold the reset button for a few seconds and 'service menu' will pop up. In there just select the oil and confirm the reset.

Front Center Armrest Lid
If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of either of the conditions listed below, perform the respective remedy as stated.
Condition 1:
Lid for the front center armrest and storage compartment has fallen off or is not closing correctly.
Applicable Models:
203/209 MY 05 or 06, Equipped with "Flip top" armrest design Remedy 1a:
Reinstall the lid. If the pivots or levers are not damaged do not replace the lid, reinstall lid as per WIS document AR68.20-P-2370Q and then check the lid for correct functioning. Starting October 11, 2004, lids replaced under warranty will be inspected for damage to the pivots and levers. If the pivots and levers are found to be okay, the claim will be debited.
Note: For 203 MY 05 or 06, if the customer is not satisfied with remedy 1a, a new armrest lid (see parts information) can be retrofitted as per WIS document AR68.20-P-1101Q. This retrofit is customer pay. Remedy 1b:
Inspect the bin or lid for damage. If the bin or the lid is damaged, replace the bin and lid per WIS document AR68.20-P-2150QA. If the damage causing part is the lid, use damage code 68119. If the damage causing part is the bin, use damage code 68115 or 68118 (depending on model).
Condition 2 (209 only - as of MY 05):
Front center armrest latch will not open or catches when opening.
Applicable Models:
209 MY 05 or 06, Equipped with "Flip top" armrest design Remedy 2:
This may be caused by tolerance problems in the kinematics of the latch or the latch may be broken. If this occurs, it is not necessary to replace the entire lid.

THIS IS A BULLETIN FROM THE DEALERSHIP ABOVE.. MOST TIMES WHEN THE ARM REST COMES OFF YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE LID . YOU CANNOT BUY COMPONENTS FOR IT ..
REPLACEMENTS INSTRUCTIONS ARE BELOW
