My 2004 pontiac grand prix stalls and randomly shut off but will always restart

Does it stall at idle or going down the highway? How long since a tune-up? Can you check for applicable trouble codes? Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free. Use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Intermittent issues can be hard to track. If a code is set, maybe freeze frame data will show what was going on when it stalled?

I bought this car a few days ago and it started smoking from under hood and smelled like hot oil, checked the oil level it is now showing low where it was full but can see no oil leaking from under

every possibility of a fire in the sump 2 possible explanations 1--- fuel in the sump from leaking injectors 2-- badly worn rings allowing compression fire to bypass and ignite oil gasses Have a compression test done to determine engine condition and if bad get a good unit from the wreckers

My "service variable effort steering" light came

Hi.

The diagnosis of this kind of problem is made reading codes with a Tech 2 GM Diagnostic Scan Tool. If they did code reading the first time, even before doing the job at a generic garage, then you would not have wasted money in wrong part and time.

If they said that EBCM must be replaced, then code returned was U1040, which means: Loss of Communications with EBCM

Before replacing the the electronic brake control module (EBCM), check connector and wiring to module. Ask the dealer if they did code reading, and ask if the EBCM replacement choice was determined by codes.

Regards.
