On my 1993 Olds.ninty-eight tecurity light is flashing.when we try to start car it won't turn over. How do I fix this

In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, or not seen at all. When the communication breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. (like it thinks it's being hot wired) The car shuts down because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. It will either turn off the starter, or the fuel injectors. The vehicle may run for 2-3 seconds before shutting down. When i drive my 1993 oldsmobile 98 my voltage will

It is almost definitely a bad alternator, but could also be a limited number of other things. A bad battery terminal could cause this problem as well or other loose or corroded connections. As for your 12 volt reading on the alternator, I should explain a little about electricity. If electricity travelled down a highway, the number of lanes would be the voltage and the speed limit would be the amperage and the wattage would be lanes multiplied by the speed limit. 12 lanes travelling at 2 miles per hour aren't getting anywhere fast. Also, a car battery's charge voltage slightly above its' output voltage, so it should be roughly 13.4 volts up to about 15 volts.

My car is overheating when

A car can overheat for several reasons, so it is going to take some thinking to figure it out.

First, think of when it is overheating! Is it very quickly or only after driving in city traffic with your AC on? If it is right away, then check your thermostat and make sure that it is opening when it should. If this is a continuous problem you might want to install a thermostat with a lower temperature rating than what the book calls for. And then install the right one for cold weather. The next thing you need to check is the water pump. If that isn't pumping water through your system then you will need to change it out. If that isn't it, then you will need to check to make sure that you don't have a blown head gasket or cracked block. To do that check your oil dipstick and look closely for any sign of coolant on it. Also check the coolant for signs of an oil residue. Some auto parts stores sell a tester that checks for combustibles in the coolant system.

Now if it only overheats in city traffic with the AC on, you need to check for partial blockage in the radiator. If you have a thermometer, you can slowly go across the radiator fins and look for differences in temperatures. That would indicate a blockage, and you could try a radiator flush to clear it, but you might have to replace the radiator if it is too bad.

Another thing to check is you cooling fan and make sure that it is working. Hint it should come on as soon as you turn on you AC.
