I have 1996 olds cutlass supreme 3.1, with 191,000 miles. Car is in excellent shape, come to find out looks like transmission has never been serviced. tranny fluid was almost as dark as oil. Car ran fine before. Had 3 spots of metal debris in pan. I put 7 and half quarts back including lucas transmission fluid.
Now car will not work in any gear at all, dip stick measures fine with fluid.

I have a 1996 Olds Cutlass Supreme that won't start intermittently... you turn the key and other than dash lights, nothing happens. It appears to be related to the security system, because it starts and runs perfectly fine most times. Can i bypass or repair this system? Thanks!
If the lights on the dash all come on but the engine wont turn over it could be a problem with the VAT security system. Your key has a little chip on it between the teeth and the handle. This is a common problem with GMs', often just replacing the key is necessary but sometimes the VAT module needs to be replaced.

I need to know how to put rear struts on a 96 olds cutlass supreme, ( instructions)
I just had to do this to my cutlass supreme. It is fairly easy. First, you need to jack the car up in the rear (but dont forget to put wheel chocks in front of the front wheels to prevent any chance of rolling, and break all of the lug nuts loose while the car is still on the ground, and put jack stands under it to keep the car raised safely) and remove the rear wheels. Then look at where the strut mounts to the wheel, there are two bolts holding it on the wheel assembly; remove those (you may need to jack ut the suspension to remove the bolts). Now locate the two smaller bolts to each side of the the strut itself on the strut mount, holding it to the car (this is located at the very top of the wheel well) and remove them. Now u can compress the strut by hand and wiggle it free from the car. Once u have the old strut out, remove the large nut that is securing the strut to the mount. In some cases this is impossible to do due to the rust that has binded them together. If this happens, you will need to purchase a new strut mount for your new strut. AutoZone seems to be the cheepest place for parts. To install the new struts just do everything backwards. When the new struts are installed, the wheels may be slanted down. If this is the case, do not worry, they just need time to "relax" or be broken in. I hope everything goes smoothly and i wish you luck.

1996 olds cutlas supreme, 3.1 L has trouble codes PO171 and PO300. Any Ideas?
The po300 is a misfire code. This means there is probably a plug, plug wire, ignition coil,or ignition module.Check the coil towers one at a time. These are know for corroding. If you find one that is corroded then replace the plug wire also.Po171 is a lean condition code. The po300 could be causing the po171.If you have not had a tune up Now would be a good time.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Have a 96 Olds Cutlass Supreme, brake lights will not work. We've replaced bulbs, fuses and brake light switch and still nothing. Help!
Try having someone push on brake pedal at the same time thay move the turn signal lever up and down slightly to see if your brake lights work this would tell me that you have a faulty turn signal switch because GM runs the brake lights thru the turn signal switch so they work if you are driving with your 4way flashers on.

have a 1996 oldsmobile cutlass supreme , the security light has been on, and now it will not let me start. Is there a reset button that I can hit to fix the problem
No reset button .You have to replace the ignition switch and lock cylinder the security system does't reconize your key and is shutting down the fuel injectors.

How do you change the fuel filter on a 96 Olds Cutlass Supreme 4 door 3.1 V6? Vin#1G3WH52M8TF372414
Hi,
Fuel filters are easy to replace but let me give you some friendly warnings:
CAUTION. To reducethe risk of fire and personal injury always follow the correct procedure for disconnecting and connecting fuel pipe quick connect fittings. This will ensure good connections and prevent possible fuel leaks.
CAUTION. Safety glasses must be worn if you use compressed air, as flying dirt prticles may cause eye injury.
Important
The fuel filter is no longer serviced in regular maintenande intervals. It is only necessary to replace the fuel filter in the case of damage or a clogged filter.
Before replacing a fuel filter it is necessary to relieve fuel system pressure.
Your fuel filter is located under the vehicle, driver side, below seating area, front of fuel tank, mounted on frame rail in fuel line
Fuel filters and elements are serviced by replacement only. Some
vehicle manufacturers recommend fuel filter replacement at 30,000 miles
(48,000 km). Always replace the fuel filter at the vehicle
manufacturer's recommended mileage.
The fuel filter replacement procedure varies depending on the make
and year of the vehicle and the type of fuel system. Always follow the
filter replacement procedure in the appropriate service manual. The
photo sequence below shows a typical procedure for relieving fuel
pressure and removing a fuel filter.
Removing a Fuel Filter on an EFI Vehicle
Disconnect the negative cable at the battery.
Loosen the fuel tank filler cap to relieve any fuel tank vapor pressure.
Wrap a shop towel around the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and remove the dust cap from the valve.
Connect the fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve.
Install the free end of the gauge bleed hose into an approved
gasoline container, and open the gauge bleed valve to relieve the fuel
pressure.
Place the vehicle on the hoist and position the lift arms according to manufacturer's recommendations. Then raise the vehicle.
Flush the fuel filter line connectors with water, and use compressed air to blow debris off and away from the connectors.
Follow the recommended procedures for disconnecting the fuel inlet connector.

Follow the recommended procedures for disconnecting the fuel outlet connector, then remove the fuel filter.
Installing Fuel Filters
In-line fuel filters are installed in the fuel line. In carbureted
engines, the in-line gasoline filter is usually installed between the
fuel pump and the carburetor. In vehicles with a fuel injection system,
the location of the fuel filter is determined by the manufacturer. An
arrow on the filter shows the direction of fuel flow.
Have fun and all the best
Ben
