2004 Oldsmobile Alero - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Key wont turn on 2004 Alero. If key is inserted
Ignition lock cylinders are pretty notorious for this. You may get the thing to turn by wiggling the key up and down while turning at the same time. I have also had luck in tapping on the cylinder with a screwdriver handle while turning the key. To completely fix the problem, you will have to replace the lock cylinder. GM (AC Delco) lock cylinder kits come with an assortment of tumblers so the new cylinder can be set-up to work with your existing keys.
My car was almost out of gas I made it to the pump put gas n and then it wouldn't start what can it be its a 2004 alero 2.2 motor help
Gm vehicles generally do not like to be run out of gas. The fuel in the tank helps keep the fuel pump cool. If it was running before you filled it than it is very likely that the pump has gone bad.
A couple of things you can do. Look for the fuel test port on the fuel rail. Remove the plastic cap and press in the schrader valve. there should be a spurt of fuel when it is depressed (use caution as not to get fuel in your eyes). If nothing comes out crank the engine over a couple of times and try again. If nothing still comes out we have confirmed it is a fuel issue.
You will need a helper for this next trick. Get a rubber mallet and smack the center of the fuel tank with the mallet while your helper tries to start the engine. If the engine starts replace the fuel pump. I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

2004 olds alero. new fuel filter and plugs. still wont start.
Did you check for spark at any ot the spark plug wires/ coils? If there is, check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail. Take the port cap off and connect a fuel pressure gauge. If one is not available, with a pocket screw driver deppress valve at port and observe if fuel pours out. If no fuel comes out at all, check your fuel pump circuit. Check for good ground and power at fuel pump connector. If power/ground are ok, replace fuel pump. If spark and good fuel pressure is present, there is the possibility of engine mechanical issues(jumped) timing chain). Also, a plugged catalitic wont let engine start but its very unlikely thats your problem. Start with your basics: spark, fuel, engine mechanical and catalitic.
While driving hit resume cruise control and the car speed up to 100 and brakes would not work. Had to shut engine off in middle of freeway, what could it be?
Could be a faulty cruise control servo activator. The power to move the cruise control Actuator is most likely coming from the Brake power hydraulic booster vacuum pipe and if the cruise control vacuum servo is failing and leaking in air you lose the brakes power hydraulics.
check the vacuum pipe coming off the power booster brake master cylinder vacuum pipe you may find a tee connector in the vacuum main pipe and follow it to see where it goes to. Could be a break in the cruise control vacuum hose but if it is only happening when the cruise control is activated a fault or leak in the cruise control servo device is the main suspect. Which you should find at the other end of the cruise control vacuum hose.
Why won't it start?
If it doesn't click when trying to start, I would look at the ignition switch. If it does, hit the starter with a hammer or rod. If it starts, replace the starter.
