Back firing through the caburator
That system should be pretty conventional so you need to check ignition timing if you have a light to do it or have a service shop do it. They shouldn't charge much to check it or, as far as that goes, to adjust it if needed.
It doesn't sound like a serious problem and you can check before you go (engine off) to see if the distributor can be moved by trying to rotate it.
You should put some kind of mark to show where it was before you try this since you could otherwise make it worse.
You have to expect though that with almost 30 years 'experience' you may need the distributor and if they are original, perhaps ignition wiring too, replaced.
A rebuilt will do fine; new, they can be costly.

Oldsmobile barada Frost plugs need diagram
Nothing specific as engine number is not disclosed but;
Typical plug sites are in the side of the block under a manifold ; at the back, inside or above the clutch housing - awkwardly near the bulkhead; and in the top of the cylinder head, often hidden under an overhead camshaft . Plugs can blow out completely, resulting in a sudden loss of coolant.
