Is the transmission a manual or at auto? I would assume it is an automatic. This may just be an issue with the fluid levels or the fluid is dirty and needs replacement. It could also be caused by a dirty transmission valve. If the debris is on the first gear valve then you may not be able to run it. If it is on the 2nd valve, then you may only get the first gear. Check for vacuum leaks on the exhaust for the turbo. It would be best to have the boost gauge used on this. Check your wiring, they may be loose or bad wiring due to heat or vibration.

1) To remove the bottom steering column cover. Use the appropriate sized male torx bit on the middle back screw and also remove the 2 other screws on each side. The cover has plastic loops where it attaches to the dash so you must move it towards the dash and then down to release it.
2) to remove the top steering column cover. First you'll need to remove the tilt steering lever though. Using a flashlight, look into where the lever attaches to the steering column. You will see a metal tab that you can push on to release the tilt lever and pull it out. Now you can take off the top steering column cover.
3) Looking up from underneath you will see 2 male torx screws holding it on. One on each side of the steering wheel. You can use either needle nose pliers to remove these if you don't have female torx screw bits. Once these are removed, use a pair of tin snips to cut the plastic just below the key lock or you won't be able to get the cover up and around the key lock. Now carefully spread that part of the cover up and around the key lock while pushing back towards the dash with the cover. It should release and come off.
