How to remove and replace front pinion seal on 1998 dodge Dakota 4 wheel drive

Very similar to replacing the seal on the rear differential, although the factory service manual recommends using a special tool to pull the companion flange (that the propeller shaft bolts to) from the pinion after removing the retaining nut. Also, the FSM states you must apply a preload to the pinion using a crush washer when you reinstall the companion flange/pinion nut. This will affect the proper engagement of the pinion and ring gear.

I just put in a PCM on a 98 Dodge Dakota how to start run for 3 seconds and cut off what could be my problem

I am assuming you installed a used or junkyard PCM into the vehicle. You are probably experiencing issues from a misprogrammed unit. Each PCM is programmed to the VIN-specific installed components of the vehicle. For example, my 1999 Dakota did not come with a factory anti-theft system installed. If I change PCMs to one that does, it will do exactly what yours is doing since there is nothing installed to tell the PCM that the anti-theft system is working. Many shops and most dealers can reprogram these units. They use the VIN from the vehicle and download the programming from the manufacturer and flash the PCM. Most DIYers do not have the equipment nor the subscription(s) to the manufacturers to get this data.

Battery charged click engine does not turn over

Hello Dholton, A battery could show 12.6 volts under no load but as soon as you place a load on a BAD battery the output voltage will drop. Have your battery load tested (a carbon pile tester simulates a load based upon your batteries CCA rating) I suspect you have a bad battery.

I had to replace drivers fender on my 98 dakota.

I would be inclined to say that you didn't tighten the battery cables enough, there is corrosion between the cables and the connections. Did you use the appropriate washer when you re attached the cables at the fender? Grounds can be fussy sometimes. Even a layer of paint in between the washer and the fender will show a bad ground..

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 3.9 with a 5 speed. I am having difficulties with the clutch and am trying to figure out if it is the clutch needing replaced or if it is the hydraulics.

Bad hydraulics (leaking/spongy) and worn out clutch have opposite symptoms. If the clutch does NOT ENGAGE - get the vehicle moving - you probably need to replace the clutch and/or pressure plate. If the clutch does NOT DISENGAGE - you can't get the transmission into gear, or there is difficulty or grinding when trying to shift between gears - your hydraulic system is not moving the clutch release arm far enough to disengage the clutch.

yeah, it does sound like dirty fluid or even that solenoid, which is usually the shifting culprit, you might want to stay away from changing that valve tho, it is very involved, and the valve body has to come off, which there are two bearings which govern the direction of fluid flow, so stay away from that, just do what you can do which is the filter and the solenoid. you'll be fine.

Check that fuses 18 and 19 are both good (located in junction block under cover at left end of dash). And check that the ground wire for the airbag system is grounded. It is a wire with an eyelet that attaches to a fastener on the left side of the transmission hump near the airbag controller.
