With the engine running try spraying a couple shots of carb spray into the throttle body. If the idle smooths out then your running lean. What you are looking at is a system made for R12 instead of R134 freon.Around 1993 most models were switched to the new freon at that time.If this is the case, you need the adapter fittings sold to convert it, which is sold at most auto parts stores.Keep in mind you can not mix the two freons, and there may be other components such as the drier and expansion valve that will need to be changed to accept the R134 gas.

Under distributor cap, there is a round plate that your wiring harness for distributor plugs into. Remove the rotor, and pull that round plate up, disconnect from harness and replace it. Referred to as pick-up plate. Know for those exact symptoms.

You need a valve job and probably the bottom end done also. it runs crappy at first because the cylinders are full of oil from the valve seats leaking after a while you have burned this oil and it runs better, Don't waste you money on an ECM. Broken valve springs , leaky valve seats, if you know all this you should know you need to rebuild your engine and stop wasting you money, by hoping it's something else. I'd sell it and just by another low end driver, because it isn't worth the repairs.
