1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Questions & Answers
Where is the starter located on a 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max
See Figure 1
The
starter motor is located on either the lower right hand (passenger) or
left hand (driver) side of the engine, bolted to the transmission
housing with two mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Removal and installation of the starter motor will require access from both the top and bottom of the engine compartment.
Fig.
1: Common starter location and installation-the starter is a fairly
heavy component, be careful when lifting it out of the vehicle
- Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack, using the proper frame positions.
- Support
the vehicle on the frame or transmission crossmember, with jackstands.
Before working under the vehicle, make sure the vehicle is stable on
the jackstands. If it is not, reposition the jackstands so that it is.
- Label and disconnect all wiring connectors at the starter.
- Slowly
loosen the two starter mounting bolts until they are loose enough to
take out by hand. Since the starter motor is uncommonly heavy for its
size, it is important to support it well with one hand, while removing
the two mounting bolts with the other hand. If the starter is not
adequately supported, it could fall causing injury. Remove the starter
from the vehicle.
To install:
- Clean the surfaces of the starter motor flange and the flywheel housing where the starter attaches.
- Reinstall the starter and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-31 Nm).
- Connect the wiring to the starter, making sure the terminals and connectors are clean and tight.
- Lower the truck to the ground
- Connect the negative battery cable
How to remove oil pan without pulling motor on 89 mitsubishi mightymax
You must disconnect the engine from the motor mounts and exhaust and remove anything that will interfere with raising it off the mounts as high as possible, once it is off the mounts and raised the pan can be removed. I read this at a owners site from a guy who has done the job, he said it is a real pain in the rear but doable.
I currently own a 1989
OIl coming up the dipstick indicates a build up of pressure in the crankcase... change the PCV valve
White smoke in the exhaust indicates water and the smell is most likely antifreeze.. Blown head gasket
I took my 89 mighty max to get smogged. It
not sure about engine light as i dont think it has one at this age but the CO2 is caused by either a O2 sensor of which you will only have one in front of the cat or the cat as well is past its sell by date ,Test the O2 sensor with a automotive meter for readings and continuety in the heater circuit ,but as a rule i change both at the same time as a four wire sensor is not a lot of money ,well a universal one isnt anyway and make sure the air filter is clean ,if they argue about the engine check light then go to dealer and ask for a copy of the certificate of homoglonation as this will state if it has a light or not
