The 4x4 drive light is flashing even though it is in 2-wheel drive. The light flashes quickly sometimes, then stops, and sometimes flashes slowly. The antilock brake light has come on three times while driving. I'm concerned they are related and there is some kind of electrical problem.
This was a weakness of the Montero Sport models. If you google Montero Sport 4WD light flashing you will find lots of information. The best troubleshooting article I have found is here: http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776 This article is about the Pajero, but the Montero Sport uses the same platform so this article applies.
The Montero Sport uses several switches and vacuum modules to put the system in and out of 4WD. If any of these malfunction, the light may flash continuously, flash intermittently, fail to come on, and it can trigger the anti-lock brake light to come on. In brief, if the 4WD shift lever is engaged, but the transfer case doesn't engage, the sensors show a mismatch and will cause the light to act funny including triggering the vehicle's anti-lock break light. These SUV's need to be shifted into 4WD regularly to keep the switches and mechanisms working correctly.
Try this before you even think about a visit to the $$$$$ Mitsubishi Dealer:
Shift the 4WD lever between 4WD High, Low and 2WD at least 100 times. Often, this will free the mechanisms and resolve the problem. It worked for me after three years of trying everything else including the dealer replacing switches, etc. If this does fix it for you, just be sure to shift the vehicle in and out of 4WD several times at least one a week and this will keep the mechanisms lubricated and functioning correctly. If that doesn't work, try the above link (article). Good luck!

DTC P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
Basically this means that the the car's computer has detected that not all of the engine's cylinders are firing properly.
A P0300 diagnostic code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why.
Symptoms may include:
the engine may be harder to start
the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
other symptoms may also be present
A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Faulty spark plugs or wires
Faulty coil (pack)
Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
Faulty fuel injector(s)
Burned exhaust valve
Faulty catalytic converter(s)
Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
Faulty camshaft position sensor
Defective computer
Possible Solutions
If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.
Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback

P0156 code means :Oxygen Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank2, sensor1)
I'm not sure but i think it's on the exhaust manifold!!!

New Battery, new alternator, on 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport - still won't charge. NTB can't figure it out. My local garage can't figure it out. Any suggestions?
Yes , this is very common with Mitsubishi. You probably have a blown fuse. On some models the alternator fuse (usually 50-60 amp block fuse) is actually part of the positive battery terminal clamp and is only available from the dealer. On other models the block fuse is under the hood and located in the same box as the fuses (only it is bolted in). If the alternator block fuse blows, your charge light on the dash will not come on and your battery will not charge ( it will go dead while you drive) even though everything is working perfectly. If it is a square fuse held in by to 6 mm bolts you can get one from the auto store for a dollar. If it is a fuse built into the positive battery clamp figure $10-$25 dollars from the dealer. Grab a flash light and inspect your block fuses carefully. Do not be afraid to cut a slot into the cheap block fuse where the bolt hole is, it will save you much trouble putting it in. Sorry about the mechanic selling you a bunch of stuff you did not need.

The cruise control on my 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport XS is not working after I took my car in for a complete interior / exterior detailing. What do you suggest I check? It has worked beautifully since the day I bought the car brand new.
well the first thing is to check all your fuses, then i would take a look under the hood for any broken or disconnected vacuum lines, this is what i would check first, hope this is helpful.

how do I check if my cooling fan works on a 3.5 montero sport suv
It is normal for the A/C air to warm up a little when stopped. Less airflow thru the condensor. It is normal for the engine temperature gage to rise up to about the 80% mark on its scale before the cooling fan kicks on. The gage will also show about the same reading on the first start of the day, until the thermostat opens. If the fan(s) are not working properly the air and engine temperature will rise. If you have a belt driven clutch fan, the clutch may be worn out. All cooling fans kinda sound like miniture jet engines when its hot out, more so when the A/C is on. Replacing the clutch is all you can do for a belt driven fan. Electric fans are more complicated....
Check all main power electrical connections first.... Electric Fan(s) not working, Checking the fan(s), relay, fuse and engine temperature sensor's.
Verify that the fans work by unplugging them and run jumper wires to the fan(s) from the battery. If they run, your problem lies elsewhere. If either does not run, it's the motor.
Next thing to check is for power at the fan connectors. You have to be cautious doing this because the engine needs to be running and warm if not almost hot, and the A/C also needs to be on. (Both must be on and running for the duration of this checklist.) The A/C fan is on the passenger side and should come on almost the instant the A/C is turned on. It is also the secondary engine cooling fan and should cycle on and off in relation to engine temperature. Use a test light to probe the two wires on each fan. If you find power the fan motor(s) is/are probably bad. If there is no power to fans, roll up your sleeves!
The temperature switch is usually located above the oil filter. If the dash gage is working, its probably OK. Next is the Fan Control Temperature Sensor, located IN or CLOSE to the thermostat housing. You will find out if it is working later is this checklist. I just wanted you to know where it is. Next is the relays and fuse's. Usually located in the engine compartment on the passenger side power distribution box. You will need to remove anything over the cover to open it. If the fuses are OK, tap on the relays or pull them out and push back in. If the fans are still not running, pull a relay and probe the socket terminals for power. Two or three of the terminals should have power, usually criss-cross from each other. Two are hot battery power, and the third is the "signal" voltage which triggers the relay to send 12V battery power to the fan. This signal voltage comes from the sensor at the thermostat. If only two terminal's have power, then I would replace the thermostat sensor if not both sensors.
Hope this is clear as mud! and helps! Please let me know what you find.

My problem is the A/T button on the dash what does it due and when should i use it
Hi,
Note: Do not confuse Dash warning light A/T with
the A/T switch, they are not connected. That warning light indicates
the Auto Transmission fluid is overheating.
AT switch
Normal Mode: - Central position, no warning light showing on dash - Used for a normal, economical, quiet and smooth drive.
Power Mode: - PWR showing on
dash (usually off) - Used for faster acceleration, by forcing the engine
into a higher RPM mode before gears are changed up.
Hold Mode: - Hold showing on
dash (usually off) - For use when moving off, from stationary, on snow
or slippery road surfaces. When the gear selector is placed in 'D'
position, the vehicle is forced to take off in 2nd gear rather than 1st,
to make starting easier, then go into normal mode. This saves having
to have the gear selector in 2 then move into D after you get going. It
also restrict the maximum revs of the engine to 3000rpm (approx).
Note: The Delica Manual states:- "low revs, when under high load will
generate more heat in the gearbox. You can flip the A/T switch to any
mode whilst driving without taking the vehicle out of gear.
Good Luck!!
Thanks!!

and i dont know how ... I guess I have to take out part of the top of the motor but need a drawing or quick instructions on how to do it .... dealeras are quite expensive for such task ...
Yes, it is a very involved job on the Montero's
But here are the instructions, with pictures (wait, it does take a while to download)
http://www.monterosportonline.com/diy-perf2.html
Depending on your skill level, read them, then go and look at it, and then determine if it is something you want to do. A job like this, you do have to have a fair amount of tools, and a place to do it (like a garage).
You can't just start, get part way into it, and stop. It's an easy Saturday afternoon job.
