Disconnect and check the battery negative first, located in the trunk,"it's the accessory battery" if it's NOT giving a minimum 12 volts the convertible top will malfunction, and please DO NOT JUMP START OR RECHARGE at 12 volts WHILE CONNECTED TO THE CAR, if you choose to recharge it while in the car use a trickle charger at 2 amp over night.
If the red battery light remain present and the battery shows fully charged 12 volts, check the big fuse 100 under the 200 amp located under passenger side foot wall behind the black circle cover, remove foot wall carpet, foam, metal plate the 10 mm nuts to see the fuse cover.

You have put the system into standby by leaving battery disconnected. If you have the radio code, re enter it. If not ring the dealership and if you are nice to them they may quote the code against vehicle VIN otherwise a small fee is charged.

Check centre bearing on propellor shaft for play. Replace if any movement or grating noise.

Sounds like auto oil pressure problem test pressure at gearbox and oil fluid level.

Turn radio on or turn ignition on - radio will show a number of lines on screen. enter code with numbers pad one code number at a time until next flashing bar opens and wait 10-20 seconds. If failed start procedure from scratch.

Sounds like low fluid in transmission or slow solenoid in gearbox valve body. Either way gearbox oil pressure test will tell.

The car is in "limp" mode.
You will only be able to access 2nd gear and reverse in order to get to workshop without causing damage. I have already answered on another page

Speculation without further details but 3 usual causes:
1. Clock spring in steering wheel for airbag open circuit.
To Test - disconnect battery-disconnect airbag ribbon from steering wheel -insert 3 -8ohm resistance bypass in airbag plug below steering column feeding clockspring. reconnect battery and see if light goes out after 5 seconds
2. Check passenger seat sensor operational.
To test - with ignition off - disconnect plug under passenger seat for sensor pad and insert test ohm resistance in feed plug. switch ignition on as test 1.
3. Check steering wheel button operation. if any radio actions do not work problem may be infrared link between steering wheel and radio (especially aftermarket modules)

Disclaimer - beware - these little cars are very complex and easy to destroy computers.

1st option: No details re history so will assume it is in limp mode only driving in 2nd or reverse?
If so check fluid level in gearbox when hot -run for 20 minutes in driveway should do the trick. Find sealed filler hose and insert aftermarket dipstick. (There are youtube videos on how to make DIY one out of curtain spring wire) If level alright it will be valve body grunge and needs expert auto to clean. Otherwise add EXACTLY 500ml of synthetic fluid from Mercedes. try operating after heating gearbox as before. If good get auto serviced.

2nd option: Operate emergency Park release if Gear change not moving. remove gear change module cover and check connections in circuit board.

Disconnect battery afew..see if it clears. If not then a module or sensor has issue. Dont go tua dealr..a private shop w alot of cars is honest

It sounds you have a problem with a vacuum activated mechanism. I would check connections and vacuum hoses for leakage. If they are OK, you may have a problem with the mechanism itself.

check the interior light switch (s). They may be reed switches.

They have a problem with the froward gear brake drums cracking and there is a replacement/updated drum available but you would need an auto trans repairer to rebuild the transmission.

Sounds like ignition barrel is not travelling through to number 3.
Try Moving steering wheel to free lock and retry for rotation of key

to tow long distances you have to remove the tail shaft. Next to tow long distances safely you will need an "A" frame hitch attached to the front of the car onto a tow ball of the towing vehicle To be honest the cost of towing the vehicle ( fuel costs ,tyres , rigging for tail lights and brake lights --legal requirements, towing capacity of the towing vehicle- will not make it a practical solution. Consider having a car transport do the job as it will be cheaper in the long run with no vehicle and legal requirements.
