1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette overheating
Is it leaking antifreeze underneath the engine at all when it sits overnight? If so I would say the water pump is shot. If it isn't leaking, it could still be the water pump but it might(hopefully) just need a new thermostat. And driving it when it's hot like that to the point where it starts to run rough means you run it too much like that and your engine will blow up and there is probably already damage. So check it out before driving it to much more.
98 Olds van, how does the high/low cooling fan work?
I'm showing three fan relays in the wiring diagram. The fans are powered by two 30amp maxi fuses. The relays and fan motors are grounded thru the engine computer. The computer takes input from the coolant sensor and the ac control to decide when fans are needed. You would need to know if the computer is grounding the relays, and if not, why not. You may need a scanner to monitor computer output.
Compass and temp display dont work
this may sound silly but does it run off of a fuse, check your fuse box in the car. sometimes it can be the small things that can be a big headache
Replacing alternator
It's not too bad of a job. First, disconnect the negative battery cable, then push on the belt tensioner with a wrench or a bar or whichever is suitable, then slip the belt off the alternator. Disconnect the wiring from the alternator, then unbolt the brackets and mounting bolts from the alternator, then remove the alternator from the engine. It may be easier to access the wiring on the back of the alternator if you unbolt the coil pack and move it out of the way a little bit first. Good luck.
How to flush coolant system in 1998 Olds Silhouette
Here's a
link to read about your Olds. Here's a
kit that has instructions how to flush. You need to drain the system, the drain valve is located on lower driver side of the radiator. When the system is dry, shut the valve and fill the radiator with new coolant. Fill until the coolant runs out the top, fill the overflow tank to cold mark.Start the engine and let it warm up until the thermosat opens. Standing in front of the vehicle there is a small bleed valve located on the right just above the thermostat open it until the coolant comes out and shut it back off. Located on the left of the engine just above the water pump is another bleed valve, do the same with it. You may have to do this two or three times before you have all the air out of the system.
Draining the radiator
most cars have a valve located at the bottom left or right of the radiator if not then you will have to remove the lower radiator hose
