I'd check the distributor cap (remove it and look for condensation on the inside of the cap) and plug wires (securely mated into the distributor cap and spark plugs). If that's not the problem, post back and we'll go from there.

A cheaper solution might be to obtain black sealant and fill all missing pieces and gaps. Available from most auto part stores. apply sealant liberally and trim excess with razor knife/exacto knife, or flat razor scraper. Petroleum-based sealants may be cleaned away from glass or paint with kerosene or gasoline.

The "Check Engine Light" is just a light. An indication of something else being wrong. It's that thing that's wrong that can cause you a problem, or not... It depends what turned it on. They are mostly for emissions, i.e. pollution controls for the engine. LOL! Like pulling off your catalytic converter. So, the light won't hurt your engine, but what made the light come on in the 1st place could, depending on what that is/was. P.S. You can't get inspected without the CAT on there.

I think the warning light is meant to be in the shape of a radiator - check your coolant level - it generally means your coolant is low. The coolant level sensor often fails on Mazda's however, so your 'problem' might actually be a dodgy sensor not a lack of coolant at all.
