Will a bad iac cause a no start
Hi Mike,Check to make sure you also have spark. The crank sensors on these engine are notorious for intermittent operation. A faulty sensor cuts off spark and fuel together. I would also double check for voltage to the fuel pump. If you have voltage and can not hear the pump, I would suspect a bad fuel pump. The fuel pump relay should be changed with the pump too.

Dash worning lights
Hi Steve, Which? and do you have an auto box. If the round gear warning is on adjacent to the shift indicator for the auto shift, it means that the gearbox has gone into fail safe mode and will select only the high gears. Regards John

Its over heating
Sounds very likely to be an air lock and easily solved. Don't know your exact model, but there is usually a bleed screw on one of the water lines to the heater matrix (it will be at or near the highest water line). DON'T go near any schrader valves as this will be the AC system! Should be a plastic plug which you unscrew, with the engine running, let undo the screw until coolant comes out, then screw back up again, keep an eye on the water in the expansion vessel as you do this. Pretty sure this is the problem.

MY BMW 1997 BRAKE SWITCH
First you remove the felt sound dampener from beneath the dash. There are a couple of lights and buzzers that have to be unplugged.
Then reach up there with large pliers and crush the switch to bits. then straighten the bracket if it got bent, and snap in the new switch. Make sure the bracket is straight so that the button is centered on the pedal arm and the pedal arm depresses the button in its normal position.
Sounds a bit drastic, but it is the best way to do the job.

My 2000 bmw 528i
Assuming average miles, a 2000 is probably due for control arm bushings. If the car wants to follow road irregularities, especially as you are slowing down, it is time.
A shimmy, however, is often associated with worn ball joints. Not quite as common on a car this age, but definitely something you want to check out and take care of ASAP.
For this car, they don't sell the bushings and ball joints as loose parts. They sell the arm with the bushing and ball joint already pressed in. Not cheap, but the money you save on installation labor makes up for the higher cost of the part.

You have to hold the key near the antenna ring that surrounds the key hole. While I was waiting for my new lock cylinder to arrive, I pulled off the steering column cover and detached the electrical part of the ignition. I was then able to start and stop the car by turning that switch with a flat blade screwdriver, but I had to have the key near the antenna ring in order to crank the starter. Once the car is running, you can put the key back in your pocket.
