Where is the starter located?
The starter is going to be located under the car engine. You will see it mounted onto the transmission housing. You can trace the path of the positive battery cable to find the starter. You can find more information here:

My Xterra Won't Start
I find it dubious that a vehicle 13 years old only has 61 thousand miles on it. They are 4 cylinder engines and the belt needs to be changed every 65 thousand.
Starts misfiring and dies after good start
pull your plugs and do a compression test and a leak down test. make sure the engine is cooled down before you take thew plugs out. first thing you may want to try is to check for vacuum leaks, if you can keep it running, spray carburetor cleaner at vacuum lines, throttle plate mountting and along the intake as best as you can. If at some time the engine pulls down then you found a vacuum leak. check for more after you fix it until your sure all is right. You masy have clogged EGR passages too.
