2001 Miata check engine light on. [cause is P0012]

The cam angle sensor need to be replace. Once it's cooked it will never the same.

Have to consider moving to synthetic oil (Like Amsoil) or remove the front license plate (please check state regulation first).

=====

I'm using Amsoil Synthetic
10W-30 in summer and 5W-30 in winter

Use 65/35 Amsoil coolant mix ration instead of 50/50

Removing the license plate does help air flow.

Clean junk collect in front of the A/C condenser and radiator.

Check radiator cap's plastic gasket.
Get a Rad-Cap

Check/Clean the ECU contacts with CRC electronic part cleaner,

@ 85,000+ miles be prepare for timing belt + water pump change.

Clean / change temp sensor ///// monitor electric fan for operation.

Cam sensor can not be overheated.

<230 F is ideal

I listed everything that can keep the motor cool.

Will not start after sitting

Check to see if engine is firing. sometimes when a vehicle sits rodent will get in and chew wires. If it is firing I would check to see if u hear the fuel pump run when ignition first on. If no problem found check fuel quality.

Car starts and stalls. Don't hear sound of fuel

The mechanic should check on the fuel pump and the Idle of the fuel pump . if the fuel pump is malfunctioning then you have to repair it.Then also the throttle if the throttle is being worn out or malfunctioning then you have to repair or replace it.The Idle should be adjusted because of the engine is stumbling .the reason why the engine is stumbling or the car over heats is that the fuel pump is not functioning good or there is a problem in the fuel pump.and also it is the reason why the engine light goes off when cold because of the engine problem is in the fuel pump.such fuel or is not entering or going to the engine.

Turns over but won't start

Proper servicing will really maintain your engine life - I wouldn't leave a belt to snap if you can replace it on schedule - timing belts and 60K services are generally rather expensive - one option is always an engine swap to a reco engine (preferably with fewer miles on it). I have a 92 NA6CE and my next major service will probably be a swap rather than replacing belts and all the rest of it...
Sounds like you have a fuel or ignition problem. There are a heap of tests for these including testing fuel pressure, checking and cleaning your fuel injectors, replacing your fuel filter (btw - this is probably due and is rather important to do as it is a $30 part that protects the $5K part ;), gapping and checking your spark plugs, checking and cleaning your air filter (or replacing it - probably due too), checking and cleaning your air intake and throttle body and checking that your ignition coils are working correctly (and that you have no intermittent electrical faults). There are numerous parts that could be at fault - without running a full diagnostic I wouldn't recommend jumping to conclusions.
HOWEVER! you have an OBDII car and I would suggest that some of the potential faults should be logged by the ECU. I assume your dealership has been bright enough to connect a diagnostic tool and verify the readouts? I really wouldn't be forking out that kind of money for on a guess at what might be faulty...just my two cents
Hope this helps, Sherwin

About a year ago I took my '01 Miata into the

the most likely problem is the cam sensor in you valve cover. we see this all the time here in Florida. once the sensor heats up it fails and starts working again when it cools off. try replacing it with on from the dealer and you should have no more problems.

Mazda Miata 2001 car problem

Batteries can have a dead cell in them, meaning there is sufficient charge to run accessories and the "check glass" may look fine (dark green in color on maintenance free batteries), but one dead cell in the battery indicates replacement time.

1997 Mazda dies when warm - runs smooth when cool

possibly a bad module------cracked---or???? In any case you may get expansion as engine compartment warms up----module shuts you down. Sometimes really hard to diagnose and just putting in a new module is "spendy"----especially if it turns out not to solve the problem!

I'm working on my Mazda Miata and didn't realize I had the fuse box to the left under the hood unplugged and tried to start the car. As a result the car will not start and I'm not sure where to start.

Question edited for clarity. Question moved to model category. Yes, you are correct, disconnecting the fuse box has broken the pairing between the key and the immobilizer system. Did you remove the main connection plugs to the fuse box? My thought is that those connectors have never been removed since the car was built and breaking a remaking the connection, you might have some connections that as not as good as they should be. Pull the connectors again and give them a good spray with electrical contact cleaner (that is NOT WD40). Then reconnect. There is various ideas on resetting the Immobilizer here. https://www.google.com/search?q=mazda+miata+immobilizer+system+reset Or a Mobile Auto Locksmith https://www.google.com/search?q=mobile+auto+locksmith+near+me Just for fun, here are the Fuse Box locations and diagrams. They have changed over the years, and as you didn't state the year, here is all of them.
