It sound like you have an issue with your torque converter slipping too much on acceleration and no un locking when you slow down. A torque converter works in a similar manner to a clutch on a manual transmission.
A vehicle is never safe to drive if you have to fight to get the car stopped.

I would almost have to be there in person to advise.I doubt anything happened to the starter as a result of the engine overheating.One of the pistons or cylinder walls could have warped when it overheated which would cause a difficult crank, but you should have noticed it when you turned it by hand.Its possible the timing is off, even possible something broke after you got it all back together.I would probably start by pulling the plugs and making sure it is not a compression problem. Also try turning the crank by hand to see if the engine is tight.

I would think that you would have examined your brakesalready . Take them apart once a year,remove all rust,clean,lube& replace any worn pads if necessary & machine or replacerotors or at least file off the edge wear

I know this is an old post but if you replace an ecu, pcm or ecm in a mazda it needs to be reflashed(reprogrammed). I am going through this right now but come to find out nothing was wrong with my pcm it just has a wiring issue or so i think! hope this helps others that may be looking.

Check out the brake light switch. It should be on or around the brake pedal lever. It is also possible for 2 bulbs to burn out at the same time.
