Engine light has come on my golf sdi

Hi panchoharris
You need to have the OBD codes scanned to establish for certain the cause of the light coming on. It is the only way to be 100% sure.

How to eplace the brake pads on a VolksWagen.

Start lifting up the car and removing the wheel.

Behind the wheel you will see The brake pads.

If you are doing front wheels turn the wheel toward yourself.

The brake pads are held in place by the caliper. The caliper is secured with two 15 mm bolts, and two 13 mm on the opposite side.
Once you undo the caliper you should also find an apex clip on top op the pads.

Once you have done that , slide the caliper up and remove the pads. On VW this opens anticlockwisely.

To refit you may need to compress the caliper. You can use a clamp, but on VW I compress the caliper using a robust wooden stick as a lever inside the U shaped part.

Before putting the new brakes I use an hand file tool to mill the corners of the pad, this will increase initial aderence to the rotor disk.

After fitting new pads, always check brake fluid level.

Remember that the car will have reduced braking power when you install new pads, this will make vehicle unsafe for a while. If the car does not recover regular braking power after a couple of miles, have it inspected by a mechanic.

Wing mirrors on 06 plate Golf TDi

Has it ocurred to you that your wing mirrors are not the electrically folding type, most are not. The switch on the drivers arm rest for adjusting the mirrrors will have a separate position for folding if yours fold. The resistance to fold by hand is very stiff as you have to overcome the spring tension, even when folded by hand they do not fold as flat as you might think.
I purchased a 2006 Golf 5 GT Tdi last year it had £5000 worth of factory fitted options but did not have electrically folding door mirrors - hope this helps.

Fitting rear brake pads

Not sure if this is true for the Golf but for most cars you need a brake pad wind-back tool. Your local accessories / tool shop will probably have one.

Yellow warning light coming on that looks like exhaust pipe

You need a code scanner hooked up to it to find out why that light is on. If you have an autozone near you,go there they will hook one up for you. Takes about 30 to 40 seconds. If not call around.

Coolant consumption

Are you sure you've checked everywhere around the engine block? What about arounr the oil filter as some has an oil cooler which tend to leak coolant? If it uses coolant, it must have gone somewhere and normally you should be able to see a trace of antifreeze leak aomewere.
Let us know how you get on.Cheers.

Why don't you call Company headquarters in your country ,U.S.A., Canada, ask for one in English. They might send one to you free of charge. Go to a Volkswagen dealer or surk the net.
Which year Golf do you have? I have a manual from my old '98, which was scrapped.
