What I would do is check to make sure the neutral safety switch is connected. If yes, disconnect and check for bent pins and terminals pushed back in the connector. If all that looks good, test it pin by pin using an ohmmeter. The pinout is on page 2 or 3 of the pdf at the link below.

Mechanics will tell you you have an engine that is about to blow up. This is the symptom of such a question.
I should recommend you not attempt to even start the car at all. Have it towed to a honest garage for a true diagnosis.
The repair may run from many hundreds up to a couple thousand dollars.

Does your car have a sun (or moon) roof? A leak in a sunroof will sometimes follow the roof over to the door post and down to the floor were the water will accumulate. This can be hard to find sometimes but having one person spraying water on the roof while a second one checks the inside of the vehicle you may be able to pinpoint the leak.
