Hi Reba. There are a few sensors that can fail or need to be adjusted. A BMW repair shop should be able to diagnose the convertible top and get a fault indicating which sensor is acting up. The most common sensor failure is the rotation angle sensor on the driver side near the left rear corner at the convertible top hinge.

The brand of battery doesn't matter, only that it is rated at the proper cranking amps to it will start the car. Fit of the battery (size and shape of the case) are critical too. Make sure the cables are attached to the proper posts and that they are on snugly. You don't say whether the engine turns over at all, but if it does, the problem is not the battery.

THE CONVERTIBLE TOP FRAME WORK NEEDS LUBRICATION USING PENETRATING OIL AND THE FRAME WORK NEED ADJUSTMENT.SOUND LIKE ITS BINDING.DISCONNECT HYDRALIC CYLINDERS FROM THE TOP FRAMEWORK AND OPERATE TOP BY HAND.TOP SHOULD GO UP AND DOWN SMOOTHLY WITHOUT RESISTANCE.IF SO FRAME WORK WILL NEED ADJUSTING.

Sensor needs adjusted, replaced or just give it a day and drive the car for an hour or so. Proceed to roll up windows by holding the up switch for about one to two minutes or use the ( located in the top above between your two sun visors) there is a switch that uses an Allen wrench. It will raise all windows and top. I'm currently having that same issue, I just experienced the problem that fixed itself when I drove it.
