1998 bmw 528i severe misfire
If you've never replaced the timing belt or chain,That would be my first thing I'd check is the Timing belt or chai, just aline the timing marks on crankshaft and then look at the position on the distributor to see if it's pointed in the #1 firing position .

Why is my remote not locking car after changing key batteries ?
One problem can be when changing batteries be careful not to push any buttons, this can cause problems or if the batteries have been dead for a while, looses its "frequency" the alarm in the car is not picking up the transmitter in the key.(key and alarm in car out of sync ) get the keys re-coded. depending on which bmw you have you can DIY ( google re-coding bmw 5.. keys) or go to bmw.

a lot of new cars have a pressure solenoid switch in them that will make car shift hard when they become defective plus also the engine computer controls when your car shifts gears as well. have it hooked up to scanner to check for any default codes .if it is the seloniod it will have a code stored for it a well but also check you transmission fluid to make sure it is not in need of fluid a well. hope this helps thanks 10 zacks
