2008 Audi S6 Questions & Answers
I have a Audi S6 2001 model V8 Quatro. Can not find the gearbox dip stick or any place to add ATF oil.
No dipstick on those Audi (ZF) transmission.
Put car with cold engine on hoist, engine running, someone shifting through gears.
At the same time, remove the large drain plug (17mm Allen IIRC), then pump transmission fluid in (need to fiddle the hose all the into the slot inside the hole) in until it starts running out.
Put plug back in.
Only way.
The hotter the transmission, the less fluid you can fill. Official transmission fluid temp is 40 degrees C (use VCDS to monitor temperature if you think it might be too hot). But generally better results at lower temps (not FREEZING cold, but 20-40 C (60-100 F) works better.

Hi Tonya,
I am sorry to hear you're having problems with your car.
The Audi is one of the finest cars in the world. Let's get yours going right.
The Codes generated indicate you have a rich or GAS RICH exhaust at times and or GAS POOR or GAS LEAN exhaust.
The idea of this is that the car is designed to burn fuel between two parameters. Your vehicle is not burning the gas it is being fed efficiently or between these parameters causing a temporary polluting effect by the standards of your area.
The codes are all associated with the cars system that maintains this level of performance.
Your cars performance is effected by the length of time is has been running when the above test are performed AND the condition of the equipment used to check the exhaust as well as the condition of your car. The Generic approach is to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and let the computer reset it self. This takes 30 minutes or do after you start it [ after disconnecting the NEGATIVE side of the battery] It is like unplugging your computer and letting it reset it self. Not something you do every day but something professionals do many times. Once the 30 minutes is up -reconnect the battery and let the car run for about 30 more minutes by driving it. The driving allows the car to set every thing at a normal setting for your style of driving. I am amazed how many times this simple act fixes things like this. IF THIS DOESN'T make a significant improvement then more on to the next suggestions please.
Without a hands on check: let me suggest you look closely for loose fitting or fallen off vacuum hoses. These are usually attached along the intake of the car. ALSO - check the MAF sensor - remove it from it's connection and simply reinstall it. This re-seating can do wonders.
If the car has an after market COLD AIR INTAKE - remove this and install the original air intake.
Your car is sadly 'throwing' so many codes I can only take you to steps that will help get you through inspection.
To get MORE information please
1-Take down the VIN # [17 digits - usually on the registration or insurance paper work - or from the dash area.
2-Call a local Audi Dealer and ask for
A - RECALLS
B -Service Bulletins
C-What your codes are.
PO430-
PO491 -PO492 -
PO171-
PO174 -
PO101 -
They will inform you as to whether they are under recall on this fuel issue. This will allow you to try the re-setting that self heals as the car re-sets it's own computer settings.
Many people have saved thousands of dollars checking for RECALLS - as RECALLS are for the life of the CAR - not the OWNER .
I hope this get's you going and passes you in your inspection.
PO430 CODE FOR AUDIT
Code P0430 is for the main three way CATALYTIC CONVERTER has low operating effeciency (plain english, the catalytic converter is worn out). This should be covered under warranty, there is a 100K miles or 10 yrs warranty on the Catalytic converter in the USA. This code has no other definition.
