Sounds like the battery is dead or dying. Most batteries reach their EOL (End of Life) between 3-5 years. One very quick way to check the battery is to first turn on your headlights - then try to start the engine. If the lights go out = the battery is dead. If the lights only dim a bit = the battery is low (and may be near EOL). If the Lights stay bright and the Engine/starter engages = Normal/Battery is Good. 2nd best way is that if the car starts normally when jump-starting, then look at the battery/charging system. If the Battery is less than 3 years old and not charging properly, there could be multiple causes for this: Low acid level in battery, Bad or Corroded battery connection, Low Alternator output, Frayed/corroded battery cable etc. A Simple Check for the Alternator is once the car is running - (If you Jump-started then Remove the Jumper-Cables) - If the engine continues to run, then disconnect the Ground Cable from the Battery (Black or (-) side) - If the engine continues to run = Alternator is Good/working.
Caution: If you discover a dry cell in the battery do not fill with water - get to a parts store and buy some electrolite (Sulfuric Acid) RE: water may freeze and burst the battery wall. Good Luck.
