1991 E36 520i - car

the clutch plates are very worn if the engine starts and the car drives for a short time. Upon driving the trans fluid will get hotter causing the fluid to get thinner causing a higher viscosity which means when the fluid is cold it is heavier keeping better pressure on the clutch pack facings. When hot the pressure is lost causing the clutch pack facing to slip which causes this problem you have here. Having the trans rebuilt will cure this problem

My 316ti compact wont lock

Depending on the age of the car.. it may simply be the battery in the key.

You can either buy a new key.. or pry open the key and replace the 5 dollar battery.. you need to be handy with a soldering gun..

Before you do this.. you can try reprogramming the key..

1:Get in the car and close all of the doors.

2: Turn key on (1st position), and wait for all the lights to go out before turning ignition off. (or under five seconds)

Perform next steps within 30 seconds.

3: Press and hold the UNLOCK button on the key.

4: While still holding the UNLOCK button, press and release the LOCK button three times. Do this deliberately, not too quickly.

5: Release the unlock button. Car's locks should cycle, indicating the key is programmed.

6: On some cars, all keys are cleared from memory, so you will need to repeat steps 2-4 for any other keys.

7: Once all keys are programmed, use the last programmed key to turn the ignition on and back off one last time.

If programming more than one key.. Must be done within 30 seconds of completing the above steps.

This is the first step.. next would be checking the receiver ..I believe it is located in or near the rear view mirror on that car.

If you replace the key battery..or the key(s).. you will have to use the above programming steps to get them to work properly.

Best of luck!

Car starts and cut out

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

It can be a possible MAF (mass air flow) sensor and vacuum hose problem. If the MAF is faulty, there will be irregularities on the vacuum supply. Now wonder it cut's out. If there are worn out or disconnected vacuum hoses the vehicle may cut out to.

I strongly suggest that you have the car scanned to know the fault code and the fix. This is wiser that guessing on what part needs replacement.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Message for BMW Owners

BMW's are not only a prestigious vehicles but they are very dependable vehicles when you understand their maintenance schedules. BMW literally pioneered "maintenance regiments". Not just a dealer check up but they were one of the first to use On Board Computers (OBC) with an integrated service scheduled. It was and continues to be a "no brainer". BMW was one of the first (if not the first) to offer "LIMP" mode. Most cars/trucks will break down and leave you stranded & usually at the most un-opportune time. Whereas a BMW will go into "Limp" mode and let you drive in a restrictive mode so you can get home or to a repair facility. Enough of BMW history. <br /> Attached is link to a free site online that not only gives you exploded views of EVERY system on your car, but also part #'s. How can i remove the

Do you have a problem with the vehicle that leads you to feel that this proceedure is neccesary?I work on Jaguars and seldom find the need to disassemble an engine without a need. The only true inspection of this type is an NDI which is basically an xray.Very expensive. Its cheaper to just guess this is the problem and replace the part. What exactly is your complaint?

try by cleaning throttle body good ! start at air filter and check. then go to maf sensor. just unplug sensor, run vehicle if it is better sensor is bad, if rpms drop it is ok. it may need a good cleaning. also check fuel pressure and all vacuum lines. it is hard to tell from this end, but try above and see. did you replace fuel filter. have a good day !!

A warning symbol keeps on showing on my BMW 318i

You need to get hold of a tool to read your supplemental restraint system (SRS) codes. Fortunately, for 2002 models, tools are commercially available for a fairly reasonable price, or you can visit a shop that works on BMWs and have them check it.
Often times, airbag codes result from someone abusing a seat belt buckle or from something heavy bouncing on the passenger seat, confusing the occupant sensor. If you just reset the light (which the code reader will do) it often will not recur. If the light comes right back, you have a problem and you need to get it fixed. If the light is lit, they air bags may fail to deploy in an accident, or they may all deploy in an accident (which would total the car and be really hard on your eardrums) The code should give a clue as to where the problem is.

2005 BMW 320D E90 MANUAL TRANSMISSION Hi a noise

most likely its the thrust bearing noisy but it could also be the layshaft bearings in the gearbox as well ,check the gearbox oil level and check its ok if ok then its a thrust bearing ,these modern motors with a nylon bearing holder are not very good to say the least ,now if oil level is low in gearbox then before you top level up use a grease gun and remove the nipple thing on the end and then pump a good grease gun full of LM grease into gearbox and then top up with EP90 as this will help seal any leaks and stop a lot of the noise ,you cannot hurt anything by putting the grease in the gearbox i do it lot to stop a leaky gearbox from leaking as the grease gets hot and sinks to the bottom and solidifies stopping a lot of the leaks from gear linkages and around the drive shafts although this is a rear wheel drive vehicle so that is less of a problem

Front doors fail to open

Sometimes (as weird as this sounds) trunk actuator will knock sync out if whack. (I used to work for BMW and encountered this once before) Try working locks from trunk actuator. Can also try from passenger front door.
