The garage should at least try to find you a good used injector and replace it. All the other problems fall back on the technician and shops shoulders for sure, weather head gasket installed incorrectly or a misdiagnoses such a a cracked head or engine cylinder.
If you are seeing white smoke, it is probably steam, which indicates coolant getting into engine.
Press the helpful button and follow me on fixya for more tips and info.
have a pressure test done on the cooling system and find the leak
it could be in the radiator tanks , timing cover behind the water pump, water pump seal, head gasket, cracked head or welsh plug rusted out
check the sump oil condition and if it is grey that is where the water is going
sure sell it, (1/2 joking ) old post.
easy has only one path, that.
or learn how to find noise, with a stethoscope.
there are great books on finding noise, even toyota books.
here is one example'
no machine runs for ever, then fail and make noises.
Abnormal.
some are a danger to you car or engine.
so smart folks never ignore (1000x that on aircraft)
see scotty link here.
http://www.fixkick.com/NOISE.html
some noises are so hard to find the dealer has the car crushed
and gives you a new one. (loose metal chucks in frame? or spoon from union hack.)
check fuses.
then if fuse good
connect (USA) a top quality scan tool to the OBD2 port (near knees)
and scan it. see all those errors
i use one that can scan all extended, Toyota DTC errors codes,
id bet , you got them,, and the FSM covers each and every one.
all cars,
ABS must be good too., scan it.
on all newer cars, scan it first then wonder.
from about 2004 to for ever.
I scan all 1996 and newer cars, no matter.
i can see errors in the live sensor readings most PCM s cant find.
(like slow oxy sensor, or funky ECT)
scan it.

Check to see if the cable is seized. If it is free, then pull up on the brake handle 20 times to adjust the brakes. If that doesnt work then look at the brakes linnings.
you can get guide from many sites.. i know few
error codes/ fault codes, wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams, torque specs, engine info, switches functioning, assemble, disassembly, complete refurbish, repair, installation every single thing is co vered
within seconds u can get the access and it's totally illustrative complete
If you're finding it difficult to service/repair your car, get one of those online manuals. You'll not have to wait
for others to answer, or rely on mechanics and all. Plus I know a website that has very good manuals online, without expiry i.e. for lifetime.

White smoke indicates unburnt diesel. Does it smell of diesel from exhaust? sounds as if diesel pump or injector fault. When you say it has drained the battery do you mean it wont start or lights etc dont work. If lights etc ok then likely to be sensor saying no to engine going.
2002 Toyota Avensis: You could have a bad fuse in one area and, you may have bulb connector issues in another area. Check your bulb retainers be sure the terminal connectors are free of corrosion. You can clean these connectors with electrical spray and a small, thin wire brush. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IfKCtX0wm4
