Perhaps the Avensis has a brittle cable like in the Highlander. Try opening the glove box and press the two side until the two extensions that prevent it from falling move in enough to allow it to fall out. I hope this will be of help.

Set the multi-information display to TRIP A. Turn the ignition switch off. Press and hold the ODO / TRIP switch, and turn the ignition switch on (position just before start/crank). After turning the ignition switch on, keep holding the switch for at least 5 seconds.
