old post in the fuel tank, did you check pressure first. using the $20 harbor freight gauge? at the filter test port 6mm? key on , it runs for 3 seconds each key on, is gas cap new? wrong cap will pull a vacuum and pump stalls drive car with cap loose yet? 31-41 PSI, got 12vdc to pump? does pump make noise each key on? if not check for 12v? yet there cranking? http://www.fixkick.com/INJECTORS/pump.html

nice double post, one, Anon and one Caroline. bulk head, (wow , a naval term) there are 2 fuse boxes. cab(drivers cabin) and hood (bonnet) this is a USA forum and we dont have that light. not here. are you in UK? or Australia.? be smart to say, so we can read the correct books for your country. big time issue that. what engine, there G16? H20? I4 and V6 respective. J20? the operators guide is lost , right? cant read it? so let me do your car best I can , no books, (but helped many outside USA) Immobilizer is not here. All fuses good, front and cab. (tested.) i turn on head lights , the work and are bright , i tune them off.

1. key on CEL glows (check engine light, it must) flashing??
2. The IMMO light if opted must be happy. (lamp actions>?)
3. above ok, i crank, and it cranks fast but will not start.
4. I then check for spark on all cylinders. is it good?
5. yes, then try test fuel(ask) does test fuel run for 3 seconds
6. yes but dies in 3second, that means fueling issues, (ask)
7. beyond this point , is complex and takes tool, got them? willing to buy them or just want wild guessing??????

the only 97 IMMO ive seen is: CEL flashing rapidly. (no pattern) and with scan tool or using the DLC jumper wire. you get 8x codes All 8x codes, are serial link SDL, errors or bad IMMOBILIZER (or key) seen on cars outside USA. I do not have any FSM for cars outside USA. that is all I have on IMMO, the flash trick. the IMMO will shut down the ECU/PCM and no fuel flows. I have no 97 oper guide for UK so can not wax smart there. so get one if you do have the crazy option. the DLC diagnositic jumper is here. place the jumper and read out the CEL flash codes see this photo. it covers all years, suzuki, for IMMO http://www.fixkick.com/look/09immo.png i recommend buying a real operators guide so you know which each lamp means, and what to do .?

what country, which engine>? G16? where is this light. try to be exact, (on the HVAC controls) or in the dash speedo cluster? and we'd need to know if it has an icon, ? better post , a real photo of lamp. did you overheat the engine (coolant gauge needle , on H) as the dash lamps vary by every country a vitara is sold. the operators guide (glovebox) is the way to know what a lamp means. (warnings) and is unique to your country! fact ! i see UK cars (we are USA here) have CAT overheat icons. (we dont have that here) and means just that. (engine too rich and misfiring or rich and exhaust cracks, sucking air ) causing CAT to OVERHEAT. no start. lets work that now. ok, key on, CEL glows. (check engine light ) must glow does it. does engine crank? fast? if yes, is the IMMOblizer lamp (dash) happy? (oper, guide again) if cel on , Immo happy then it cranks fast ,do you have spark to all cylinders of unstated size engine? our cars the USA OBD2 scan tools all work in 1997 but in say UK not. so ... that to changes diagnosis BIG TIME>.

1: tune it up this decade? 2: EGR stuck open, the EGR main is well hidding behind the intake man, at fire wall it must not stick open it can screw up 10 ways from sunday but cleaning it is a 50k mile service point, in the opr guide. http://www.fixkick.com/EGR-Gen3.html 400 rpm is usually EGR caused it must NEVER be open at idle.

Should be a set screw by throttle cable possibly

Hi there, C if u can go 2 a wreckers & get that lead & replace it by slicing it into the wiring loom or U might get lucky 2 replace that whole piece from end 2 end!!!! This should work 4 U!!!! Good luck!!!!!!

5sptry difficult? in what way?grinds, or down or upshifting the synchros are slow?parked, or moving?

have a compression test carried out you may be having early signs of cylinder wear also check when last time fuel filter was changed as lack of fuel could also cause this under load

if power going to distributor but not out either module or coil is bad. test wires to coil if no power module bad if power coil ck as engine is being turned over

either your fourth gear control solenoid is bad or trans is going out. ck fluid level and look , smell if burnt trans is bad . have scanned to ck fourth gear solenoid.

most likely in the fuel tank

Need to hook up a set of gauges and watch the low side pressure. If it drops to 15 psi and the clutch cuts out then you may be low on freon. If the high pressure goes to 300+ and the clutch cuts out then you have a problem with the ac cooling system.

Wow, well that can get expensive depending upon what the problem is. Be sure who ever is working on it is qualified as air bags can be very dangerous. I dont Usually recommend dealer repair services but in this case I would.

check the fuse

I would look at the headlight switch.
