What could be causing misfiring, billowing black smoke when revved and really bad gas mileage

Is your choke stuck on? The float in your carb could be stuck. Black smoke means too much gas being burnt. Make sure your air filter is clean. I saw a car that would not run because the air filter was plugged.

Just pull out the 10amp cluster fuse and put it back in. The cluster will pop right back up. My 2004 does it every time the battery goes dead.

My 2005, Pontiac sunfire has no activity after I changed the fuses because I thought that was why 2 of the gauges died first. However, I changed the fuses and then no gauges worked. Now, with no attempt to fix it, the rpm, and gas gauges will randomly get readings? What is your idea???

check your negative ground cable first thing. make sure that it is clean on the battery and all the other places it attaches too, and there are several. disconnect the battery negative and clean it and then disconnect the positive too. when you reinstall them after at least 5 minutes make sure they are very tight. not to the point of breaking them but tight. check back see, turn the key to the On only then off and then ON ( not start) shut it off and then start it as normal. is your check engine light on?

don't know about this exact car, but most brake calipers use either a 3/8th inch allen (hex) head or a T-50 torx head bit. The Hex wrench is what I would get without seeing this. I have also used a ratchet extension on some cars.

I would just like to know what tools i need to replace my 2001 pontiac sunfire battery. i have looked everywhere online and there have been no answers to as wht size sockets i need.

Besides the battery retainer, all I know that's left is battery cables. For the battery cables you might be able to use a pair of vice-grips and or pliers, maybe an adjustable wrench. To work on your own vehicles you need a basic set of wrenches and sockets, standard and metric sizes. Vice-grips are good if the battery cable bolt or nut has been rounded off. It's always best to use the proper tool. Other than battery cables, I don't know what bolts your talking about? What is liter size of engine?

You have air in the system and that prevents the thermostat from opening. Once leak issue is fixed you have to add antifreeze and squeeze the rad hoses repeatedly until the air is forced out. Run the engine up and down from 2 or 3000 RPM quickly to force air out, shut it down and refill when cold until it starts throwing heat you will still have an air lock.
