Hi Mark Thats an easy one... It gets told to engage by a single wire attached to the clutch. This usually has a bullet type connector close by. 12v = ON Disconnect it. Solenoid disengages. (you could put a switch in the line) This wire is controlled by the AC (control electronics) temperature sensor & the pressure build up in the refrigerant lines. Eg The unit turns on to cool vehicle but the refrigerant is low or the high pressure line is too high so it shuts off. Then the cycle starts all over again. You need some Service on your AC system. NO You don't work on a motor with a the battery connected, that is an unsafe practice You need to have the tools needed to lock the cams & use long ratchet or air gun, if that is permissible, on the removal part Only use a torque wrench to put it back together

There are 2 lots of fuse boxes on cars, one in the engine bay and one normally by the drivers door or just under near the drivers knee... This is where the fuse will be and it should be marked as illum. or tail... Let me know how you go.
