check under the car at side of transmission while a helper shifts the lever through the gears to see if the linkage is hooked properly to the shifter levers on the transmission.

go under the car to side of transmission where linkage hooks to shift levers have someone shift the gears look to see if shifters on trans. are moving and the linkage is working fine.

May be weak battery. Some cars won't kick over when battery power is weak. If it won't start even when jumped with cables, then check connections and engine ground to battery cable. don-ohio

jack up car, fit safety jacks at each side of frame well in front of rear wheels, remove tail shaft , place floor jack under rear axle housing and jack up , but not lifting off safety jacks.remove brake lines, remove rear shocks, remove drag links ect from chassis frame, lower and remove jack, wheel out rear axle.

Disconnect battery take note of the way the drive belt is fitted write it down using cogs as markers then draw the belt onto them in same order (belt only fit one way) then with a 3/8 ratchet leave r the adjuster and remove belt unplug wiring undo bolts holding it to the motor.

I would replace the fuel pump relay, the diode inside the relay is likely defective and this allow the relay closing coil to energize and turn the pump on, the repay is under the hood I think in the fuse and relay center.

It probably has fuel injection. There are sensors that tell the fuel injection how much fuel to put into the engine. The auto supplies sell a diagnostic tool that you plug into a socket on the car, usually under the dash. Plug it in and it will flash a dash light in the dash to tell you what is wrong (like morse code). I've used it on my 93 chevy truck and it flashes number 1 pause, then 2, both three times, that's a 12 means starting diagnostic, then flashes number of what part or parts are functioning wrong, made for many makes of car. Recently mine had similar problem, coolant sensor was telling engine computer it was hotter than car actually was, had to hold throttle to floor to start, it was code 15. The instructions tell you what that means. That might help you.

possible problem in the "new" carby with the accelerator pump not working look down the throat of the carby and work the accelerator (engine stopped) if you do not see a squirt of fuel, work on the carby
