have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Could have ajar switch problem .

These plugs are usually on the side case, have a look you will find them.

try for adjustment, cable adjustment if cable operated opening, or electric short if solenoid operated it could be knocked down a bit making it had to latch

most likely you lost the ground for that system, time to take it to a good mechanic.....

Did you take it to the dealer ? Still under warranty .. Do you know the amount of electronics that are incorporated into that vehicle , control modules , C.A.N - controller area network communication's data bus etc.... An you want someone on here tell you the reasons why ! You should read up on it .A lot of testing is the only way to find these type problems . If what was left on was on same power as dash & radio, could be bad fusible link.

In the fuse box with all the other fuses under the dash or the hood ,check your hand book for location.

Joann, 1 st check the latch assy. for any visible damage, replace if bent or worn. Sounds like the lock mechanism is seizing up, You can try to spray with a thin oil WD (penetrent oil) etc. to free up including inside lock, to lube the small tumblers inside. You have to, if able, remove latch assembly and soak in oil over night if real bad. The lock actuator may also be defective and links below will tell more about that. The striker assembly may be out of adjustment. This is the metal piece that the trunk lock assembly grasps when the lid is closed. These strikers usually have bolts that can be loosened allowing the striker to move up and down to obtain proper adjustment so the trunk will open/close properly

Modern auto transmissions often need the oil level checked with the use of diagnostic equipment. Sometimes there is a plugged hole where a service tool dipstick can be inserted for a rough level check or to draw an oil sample for testing. Workshop manual or friendly dealer staff should be able to provide this information. If a temporary dipstick exists you will either need to buy one or make one to the same dimensions as the Ford part.

Probably has the check plug that unscrews like checking older lawnmower engines oil. PITA too.

Why do you need the colours? If you look at the harness there will only be 2 wires going to the bulb holder, one power, one ground. Use a 12v circuit tester, turn on the side lights and see which is live. Its usually a coloured live and black or brown ground.

If your Focus has fold down rear seats you may be able to climb into the trunk and pull on the Emergency trunk release hanging inside the trunk,

Check out your wiring, remove all grounds and clean and reinstall. Check all your connectors for loose ,bent pins or poor connections. If their is a communication problem the harness will have to be carefully inspected and use an ohmmeter to check continuity of all the wires.

INSERT THE KEY AND PULL TO OPEN, THERE MAY BE SOME CLOTH CAUGHT IN THE LOCK LATCH

verify the solenoid / motor for the latch is good 1st 2nd does it groan or try to turn any buzzing lites or leds dimming put a meter on it an measure voltages as you try switches

If y.ou have an electric release for the trunk, then unplug it and use the key. If the trunk stays shut, then its an electrical problem. If the trunk still opens by itself it is mechanical and use the gap the other expert recommended. If this a new vehicle for you there could have been collision damage in that area with poor adjustments or cracked parts.
