A clogged fuel filter may be the problem to your Subaru not starting or a fuel pump problem. The list of reasons why your Outback will not start and run goes on. A gasoline powered engine requires three main components to start and run, proper amount of fuel, oxygen and a spark. I personally had a problem with my fuel pump not turning on and pumping the proper amount of fuel to the injectors. A fuel pump is easy to replace and remove. Do to the nature of gasoline being extremely combustible and corrosive I would HIGHLY suggest having your outback inspected buy a mechanic that is qualified to work on Subaru vehicles. I also had a problem with the coil pack not providing enough power to the spark plugs. Replacing the coil pack is relatively easy a 10 mm socket will remove most of the bolts that will need to be removed.The coil pack essentially provides the spark for the engine to continue running. This is a part that is commonly over looked by DIY mechanics. I did at one point have a problem with a sensor that would detecthow much oxygen the engine was using and needed. I replaced that and my Subaru ran beautiful. If what I have mentioned above feel uncomfortable for you to replace please have a qualified person fix your Subaru with there hands.

Well, you have made our job easy with this one and very much diagnosed the car all by yourslef,, you are absolutely correct...it definetly sounds like a rear diff problem, and it is ok to drive with FWD only and have the rear unlocked..........just keep an eye on it that you dont start hearing other noises....as worst case scenario, it could be gear related and even though it is not locked in AWD, the gears/shafts are still turning.......so as long as it stays quiet in FWD, you should have no probs until you have the time/money to have it fixed...no 4WD adventures though

It sounds like it has lost it's base idle setting. These are fly-by-wire which it is computer controlled. Has the battery been disconnected lately? Any codes stored? Could also be dirty throttle valve.

Sounds like you have a bad turn signal switch, unless you ahve the emergency flashers on and one side is not working. turn on the emergenvcy flasher and make sure both sides work. if they do, you have a bad switch

Most fuse box covers have a diagram with fuse lableled so you know what they are full What outback is it I have a manual

Timing is all ecu controlled. R you looking for cam timing?

Any good quality 10w30 should be fine.
