Transfer Case Description and Operation The Borg Warner (BW) model 4481, RPO NR3 transfer case is a one-speed, full time, all wheel drive (AWD), transfer case. The transfer case provides power to both axles, through an external planetary type differential, which has two different sets of pinion gears. The planetary differential provides a 40/60 torque split, front/rear, full time. This means both axles are constantly being driven for maximum traction in all conditions. The transfer case external type planetary differential functions the same as a typical rear axle differential. The transfer case differential pinion gears function as the spider gears, and the sun gears function as the side gears. The following actions occur because of the planetary differential: • If the vehicle is on a hoist, the front propeller shaft can be rotated by hand. • The vehicle cannot be driven if one propeller shaft is removed. • Operating the vehicle on the hoist can damage the differential pinion gears, by over-spinning. • Operating the vehicle with one propeller shaft removed causes over-spinning of the differential pinion gears. The BW 4481 design of the planetary differential allows the use with the Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES) vehicles. The VSES takes use of the planetary differential, by applying braking to a tire that has less traction and dividing the engine torque to the other axle. The BW 4481 case halves are high-pressure, die-cast magnesium. Ball bearings support the input shaft, the front output shaft, and the rear output shaft. The transfer case requires DEXRON®III ATF GM P/N 12378470 (Canadian P/N 10952622), which is red in color. This system does not have an encoder motor.

I wouldn't be so sure it's a bad motor. There are several limit switches in the tailgate that have to show made before the roof will be allowed to move. You really need a GM computer to work on one to be able to see in real time what switch is and which one isn't made causing the fault.

Not according to Hollander interchange. Late 1998 to 2002 interchange. 2003 is all by itself. And 2004 to 2006 interchange. It doesn't tell what the differences are, but I would have to guess the electronic controlls.

The 95 GMC 1500 V6 automatic transmission may not be compatible with the 89 K1500 V8 4x4 due to differences in engine size and drivetrain. It's recommended to use a transmission that matches the engine and drivetrain specifications of your 89 K1500.

Check the fuse for the motor and you that you can here the motor trying move it. With the ignition OFF and safely using step ladders access the sunroof from above. Using a stiff toothbrush, cotton buds, (cue tips), and a clean rag, clean out the channels the sunroof sits in. if you are in any doubt go to a good mechanic or a good auto-electrician and get them to look at the problem.

Try disconnecting the starter solenoid control lead and see if it still blows the fuse when no engine crank while switch in start position. Try disconnecting the alternator and see if symptoms change. You might also try using a 12V test lamp (or better, a headlamp) in place of the fuse. It may not crank but it allows you to low power circuits without blowing fuses. Observe lamp brightness as you go from run to start. Brightness is relative to current flow. Which airbag is this nearest to? Steering wheel? Passenger side dashboard? Seat? If it's under the seat there is often some wiring that goes to the seat belt buckle as part of that restraint system.

The first step of the diagnosis is reading OBD2 codes for direction. But codes must be interpreted and further testing executed to make a diagnosis else it's guessing which typically causes more problems than it solves.

If you can read codes you still need a fundamental understanding of the systems and basic electrical troubleshooting skills to complete the diagnosis.
