Understanding Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT)

Variable Camshaft Timing
With all of the gadgets on cars today, most of us find enough to boggle our minds inside of the passenger compartment let alone what's under the hood. Recently, many manufacturers have moved torward VCT's to improve performance, emissions and to eliminate other components. Let's start with the EGR valve or exhaust gas recirculation system. By installing a variable camshaft system on the exhaust camshaft, the manufacturers were able to eliminate the EGR valve, save money, and lower emissions.

VCT's have been installed on exhaust cams, intake cams, both cams and single overhead cams. The system is operated by using engine oil pressure to move a phaser that is mounted to the end of the camshaft and adjusts the camshaft timing while the engine is running. This is a brilliant system and the performance gained is amazing. The oil that is pressurized by the oil pump moves through oil channels to a solenoid that is controlled by the vehicles computer. The computer takes input signals from various sensors, processes the information and sends a signal to the solenoid that operates the cam phaser and in turn, adjusts the camshaft as needed.

How can I keep my variable camshaft system in good working order?
The best way to keep your VCT system is good condition is to perform regular oil changes and use a factory approved oil filter. Use of an aftermarket filter that is not factory approved can damage your engine. The material that makes up the internal portion of the filter must meet strict guidelines to assure that the material doesn't break away and enter the engines oil channels. This could block the oils path to the camshaft phaser and cause conditions such as rough running, noise and poor emissions/fuel economy. Dirty oil is a VCT's worse enemy. A few dollars extra can save thousands in repairs.

1993 Ford F-750. 7.0

Hi, I do not have wiring diagrams for the F-750, but I'm assuming the ignition systems are similar for all trhe F series trucks. Are you getting battery voltage to the coil when the key is in run and start? If not, first verify the fuse is good. If there is a noise capacitor on the positive coil wire, remove it temporarily while troubleshooting. If that cap is causing low voltage to the coil, replace it. If you still cannot get power to the coil, the problem may be the ignition switch. If you have power to the positive coil terminal, pull the coil wire out of the distributor and lay it on the engine where it has about a quarter inch gap to engine ground. Turn the key on and momentarily jump a ground wire to the negative coil terminal to see if it will release a spark. If the coil will release a spark this way, the problem is back in the distributor. Was everything in there replaced? Please let me know if you have questions.

I have a horrible rattling

There is a good chance it will. If its the cheaper of two problems you would just need to get loose gravel out of the heat shield or tack weld the shield back on.

The other possibility would be the inside of the right Catalytic converter has come apart and the beads are rattling around.

Before going to the Repair shop, look under the front seat for loose debris.

Any work under a dashboard is awkward although not necessarily difficult as such. One thing to consider is that an air conditioning system has refrigerant suspended in oil in its pipes, and disconnecting pipes in such as system will spray this mess all over the place.

Hi, I need to replace

The battery is required by law to be securely fastned due to the fact that it is based on acid, and can cause serious damage in the event of a crash, so i dont think you can change it without undoing any bolts.

Hi, I have a Ford

the first thing to check is make sure you have a gas cap.then if you haven't changed the fuel filter and or the air filter in a while that could be your problem. also some cars have two fuel filters just ask the auto parts shop. you may also need a fuel pump that is when it starts to get expensive and some times your 02 sensor could be going bad,you will find that in the exhaust manifold it usually screws into it.also take to an auto parts store and see if they have a diagnostic machine that may be the best idea because that machine will tell them what is not working properly.
