Don A has an excellent answer, but if you have a sunroof, that is more likely the reason. The pipe runs down between the door pillar and the windshield and there is often a join there which can part. Be careful with compressed air as it can blow joints apart.

The clutch is electronic and works via a fuse and a relay. The relay may be the item at fault. They can be tested. Here is the relay

Playing around with the fill valve releasing 'air and 'Freon', means you now need a refrigeration engineer, because you have depleted the contents in the system. A few educational points for you.
It isn't called 'Freon, it is is Refrigerant R-134a
There are two caps where you may have vented. High Pressure side and Low Pressure side. Refrigerant is both a liquid and a gas depending on which side you vented and there is also oil in there. Even with liquid gas, it will turn to gas (or 'straight air' as you called it) when pressure is released. The wet stuff and the gaseous stuff need to be in the right places! There is no 'just air mostly' in there, there is ONLY refrigerant gas, refrigerant gas in a compressed liquid state, and light machine oil.
The Low Side is a fat pipe with a blue cap.
The High Side is a thin pipe with a red cap.
Your system has 5.03 ounces of oil. Notice that EXACT amount).
It has 1.10 pounds of Refrigerant Gas to a tolerance of plus / minus 0.11 pounds, or to put it in another most understandable way, 1.76 OUNCES plus or minus. How much did you let out, exactly in ounces? Now you need it all sucking out using a vacuum recovery machine and the correct weight of refrigerant put back in. It is not something you can guess. This Tip I wrote explains.
