I don't know if this could help you or not but I have a 2004 Infiniti G35 sedan and my brakes lights went out and I couldn't figure it out and I'll be damned if it wasn't in the wiring harness that comes down when the trunk closes there's a little one to the right there and I don't have a 2004 but don't count that one out you have to split it and you'll see that the wires somehow just got dry and cut from the sleeve and I just rewired it boom back together and it runs and it stops with brakes lights anyways good luck.

Is check engine light on? Get the codes rrad with a obd2 scan tool and google sesrch the codes.

check for p030x code also the trans can make the noise you describe when it has no malfunction.

find the parts online go look for an image lets you know what to look for on your car 2002 i35 infiniti bank one 02 sensor two cam position sensors fault codes mean replace the parts the codes say clear fault codes and if any codes return means it wasnt the problem
