Audi A8 - Popular Questions, Answers, Tips & Manuals
Hi, I recently had gearbox sump gasket replaced along with filter and oil. A8 4.2 now developed clunk from 1-2 & 2-1 up and down gears. Otherwise very smooth as normal. Appreciate advice ..
It would help to know year and model (and therefore gearbox model) of your A8.
The 5HP24A in the D2 series (circa 1997 to 2002/3) has several issues and are commonly regarded as "fragile".
I have never experienced this when changing my fluid (I have a 2001 S8), but I have read reports that some filters have pick up tubes that are too long and need to be trimmed back or the gearbox can suffer from fluid starvation, particularly when pushed.
Also check that the gearbox sump has not suffered from any impacts. The fluid pick up is roughly central to the sump at the deepest area (both the oil drain and fill plugs are higher).
Was the work performed by an Audi or ZF specialist? There is a particular fill procedure which must be followed.
The gearbox can also suffer from pressure spikes (particularly in early models) which can damage the Clutch A basket, which is used for gears 1-3. However any damage here will result in immediate limp mode (all gears lit up on the DIS screen and gearbox locked in 4th gear).
Audi a8 temp,high
Temp sensor is at the right hand rear of the engine (left side when looking from the front). You can get to it from above without too much issue.
They regularly fail and are a cheap replacement part. They don't throw diagnostic codes. Go genuine, or Bosch.
To replace, you pull the retaining clip out to the rear (be careful, they get dropped easily). The sensor itself pulls out, but will probably be stuck in slightly, so don't damage the cars plug pulling it out (disconnect plug first).
Make sure the o-ring comes out too, or go fishing for it (they can be brittle and break with age). New sensor will come with a new o-ring.

Top up coolant with water
Water is fine since its warmer weather coolant is used mainly so it doesn't freeze as water would. You should be fine as long temps don't get below 32 degrees waters freezing point.

Squeal could be idler pulley bearings. If someone has taken off the door panel, could be that a connector was not properly reconnected. Could also be fuses if you have not checked. Don't spend that kind of money until you know what is wrong.
