Override switch issue

I have a 97 Polaris Xplorer 500 4X4. The bike cranks and idles great but when you rev it up it starts to cut out and miss, press in the override switch and it revs normally. In either hi or low gear you must have the button pressed for it to run good and not miss but even then once you get to about half throttle it starts cutting out again. Also the AWD will only work with the override depressed.

SOURCE: 97 polaris 500 sportsman 4x4 atv carburetor

If you have gone through the carburetor and your atv still won't rev it sounds like the exhaust lobe on the camshaft is going flat. They have an overhead camshaft in the 500 motor and the exhaust lobes seem to wear down if the oil is broken down (gas in oil) or if the wrong oil is used. Easy way to tell is to remove the 8 screws on valve cover and the spark plug. Then remove the 4 screws holding down the rocker arms. Once the rocker arms are removed you can see the camshaft, pull on the recoil rope to rotate engine until the lobes are facing upward. The two outer lobes are the intake lobes, and the center is the exhaust lobe. If the exhaust is worn, you will definitely be able to tell because it should be about the same height as the intake. Or if you don't feel comfortable doing that I would recommend a reputable repair shop. Hope this helps, and if you need more help let me know, Daniel.

Why won't my 1996 polaris xplorer 300 idle?

Odds are your carb needs to be taken apart, cleaned, reassembled and adjusted if needed.

2006 Polaris 250 trailbalzer, starts & revs for 20 secs then cuts out. Cleaned carb, fuel pipes & air filter, flushed tank, & still cuts out. No problem with fuel to carb. Does restart & cuts out

Have you checked the Crankcase seals? I have 2 Big Bosses with 250's. 1989 + 1992

Both were terrible at starting and idling....after much troubleshooting I finally changed the crankshaft seals. (Which btw looked fine from the outside!) machines can be Cold now and will start 2 or 3rd pull with the cord now. Idle perfectly.

Also the oil injection system stopped working intermittently. Machine would just quit.....crank and crank it forever. So I just started using 32/1 mix and unhooked the Oil Injection cable from the Throttle.

awd will only engage in reverse if override switch on left handlebar is pressed will also skip if too much throttle is applied without override button engagement

400 polaris xplorer 4x4

Hey Randy,
Sounds like the battery needs to be replaced. Take the battery to O'Reilly, Autozone, Advance Auto and have the CCA, (Cold Cranking Amps) checked..(load test).. this will tell you whether the battery is good or not. When you get a new battery.. make sure the connections are clean and tight..put a little heavy grease on the connections to prevent corrosion. This should fix your problem.

1998 Polaris Explorer 300. Could you please tell me what the compression reading should be? I turns over but wont start, will start if boosted but dies out when you let off the gas. Before all this started...

Hey Ang,
Just from what you have told us... this seems a little more complicated than simple... Does it only run wide open? ...Has anyone been "working" on this atv...?? IF they have been working on the carb, you may have put the slide in incorrectly...there is a groove down the side of the slide and a pin in the carb the groove runs on...
1. Compression should be 120PSI...or more, with the the throttle held wide open and kicked over 5-8 times.. The carb may need to be professionally cleaned and set...(take it to a qualified professional)...do this and reply to me..
